A family reunion occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Lawless on Sunday August 29. Attendees included Jean Lawless, Diane Lawless and Laurie of Neepawa, Betty Boughen, Debbie and Richie, P Stewart and Dave Stewart of Dauphin and Neepawa, Alex Stewart, R Kelso and boys of Williams Lake BC, Bill Bannister and Tracy of Winnipeg, and Karl Lepischak of Winnipeg.
John Cormack turned 80 with a noon family dinner and an Open House from 2 to 5 pm on August 29. Nieces nephews and grandchildren gave gifts including a Keystone rapid-shot polaroid camera. He received many cards and enjoyed a very happy day.
About 50 former Islay School students and families from the 1950s gathered at Vista Community Hall on Saturday August 21 1976 at 5 30 pm. Hostesses Margaret English and Loretta Palahicky managed the guest book. Attendees viewed year photos spoke of current events and shared old memories while guests traveled from Winnipeg and Hinton. Dancing to Bob English taped music followed supper though harvest weather kept several away.
Rossburn Lions Arena Building Committee seeks volunteer labor for the new waiting room project started last week. The committee asks individuals or groups to leave names and preferred days and times with Dwain Lawless or any Lions Club building committee member.
Manitoba agricultural engineer Doug Small warns of rising harvest fire reports due to warm dry weather. He cites chaff on exhaust manifolds, wiring shorts, hot mufflers near stubble, and burning residue as risks. A dry chemical extinguisher, proper training, daily straw cleanup, and wide firebreaks are urged to prevent fires.
Census figures show the R. M. of Rossburn population falling from 1077 in 1971 to 792 in 1976. Acting municipal secretary Leonard Mackedenski notes the steep loss jeopardizes provincial grants based on population, with next year's grant potentially down about 4360 dollars, or 16 mills.
A two day heat wave peaked Monday with a September record 94 in Rossburn while Dauphin hit 100. Harvesting this fall is several weeks ahead of normal due to above normal temps since spring. Summer weather includes 35 thunderstorms on 27 days and 26 days over 80 degrees with two over 90.
