District Farmer Injured In Mishap While Combining

Rossburn district farmer Lorne Tanasychuk suffered severe leg injuries Friday evening about 9:00 p.m. when he was caught in moving parts of the combine he operated. Rossburn RCMP rushed him to Russell Hospital where he is recovering with crutches. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Raymond Sherritt reports a large, high quality apple crop from Jim Sherritt residence in Rossburn. About 50 pounds harvested though not fully ripe, picked early due to garden vandalism reports. The apples reflect a frost-free spring and good growing conditions.

Calgary Golfer Wins Sandy Lake Golf Tournament

Dave Bradshaw of Calgary Alberta won the 6th annual Sandy Lake Golf Tournament held August 28 and 29 after a sudden death playoff with Jim Burney of Charter Man. The event drew 69 entrants with a Smorgasbord supper and multiple flight winners including T P Moffat Strathclair and Ron Sokolowski Brandon.

Elk damage reported to crops near Rossburn field

Manitoba Teachers Attend 11th Leadership Seminar at Brandon

John Carley of Russell and D Jerry Samuels of Rossburn represented the Pelly Trail Division Association at The Manitoba Teachers Society leadership seminar held August 22 to 27 at Brandon University. Over 100 teachers from across Manitoba attended sessions on leadership principles and topics for the coming school year, with consultant Vern Trott from the University of Toronto and an eight member leadership team assisting. The seminar included discussion on the use of auxiliary personnel in schools, a topic under study following a resolution at the spring AGM to formulate a comprehensive policy.

August Warmer Drier Than Normal

August 1971 was warmer and drier than normal at the Rossburn Climatic Station with average daily highs of 78 and lows of 54. The month’s highs reached 88 on August 7 and 8, while a low of 41 occurred on August 2. Record extremes include 96.4 on August 16, 1961 and 32.2 on August 20, 1957. The wettest August is 4.58 inches in 1963, while 10 inches fell in August 1961.
