The Pelly Trail School Division met October 2 with most trustees present. The board closed the Elphinstone Elementary access road and gravelled the rear lot for a bus route, reducing backtracking. Luba and Kopetsky Jackson pupils will be last to board and alight to cut mileage. Bev Charney hired as paraprofessional at Rossburn Elementary. Manitoba education groups merge to boost services
The Alcohol and Drug Education Service of Manitoba merges with the Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba under a single provincial umbrella. Health Minister Bud Sherman says the agreement will improve delivery of education and treatment services while addressing recent financial difficulties. Separately, Natural Resources Minister Brian Ransom announces a $2.5 million top-up to offset fire suppression costs through September 30, 1980, with Manitoba experiencing 1,073 fires this year covering 603,300 hectares and total suppression costs at $9.4 million.

Russell Post Office to celebrate 100th birthday
Russell Post Office marks its centennial on November 1 with Canada Post planned events on October 29 a two hour coffee and cake party at 10 00 a m. Postmaster Thomas Smart will receive a framed congratulatory letter from Postmaster General Andre Ouellet. Attendees include area customers former postal workers and officials from Winnipeg Virden and Morden.

Hunting by permission only gains support from farmers
Manitoba cattle producers urge clarifications on crown land posting under Section 33(b) of the Wildlife Act and on liability for landowners who grant hunting permission.
