The Ukr. Catholic Women's League held a bingo on Oct. 4 in the Parish Hall. Total proceeds were $81.50 with numerous donated items and prizes awarded to named winners, including household goods, food, and cash donations contributing to the fund.
Members from across the Birtle Russell constituency gather at Rossburn Town Hall Thursday evening for the annual meeting and officer elections for the coming year. President Charlie Louch of Binscarth will chair the session.
Rossburn High School names officers for 1961 62 with Clarence Lazaruk as President Leslie Andrew Janet Johnston as secretary treasurer and class representatives from grades 9 through 12 The initiation day is set for Friday October 20.
The Women’s Institute October meeting on Tuesday Oct 3 drew 16 members and 8 visitors. Mrs Anne McIntosh presided as Mr Fred Greaves Brandon director of Community Education spoke on the Children’s Aid Society covering 10000 square miles of Southwest Manitoba. He urged financial aid and foster homes to support children and unwed mothers amid social issues and alcohol abuse.
Tuesday evening’s Fowl Supper hosted by the Mr. Orthodox ladies drew a good crowd. Organizers hope other groups stage similar events to provide more good food for the community.
Nomination Day ends without voting for district electors in Rossburn Village and Rossburn Rural Municipality as Reeve candidate M J Sotas withdraws. Alex Cleland wins Reeve by acclamation along with Ward One councillor Morley Brown Ward Three councillor Mike Pawluk. Village mayor J G Stitt and councillors Peter Wladyka and Harry Aylwin also acclaimed. School trustees N Major D Andrew and D Maxwell acclaimed.
The Rossburn Sewing Sisters held its first meeting October 2 in the school auditorium. Officers were elected including Gloria Kostesky as president Murial Ducharme as treasurer Gail Serefin and Colleen Major as reporters and Cheryl Scarrow as historian. Meetings are set for Tuesdays at 7 30 with leaders listed for Projects I II and IV.
Donations continue for the fire disaster fund aiding Mr. and Mrs. Joe Maydaniuk. Local donors listed include Hachkowski Kozun Glushka Trakalo and others giving up to five dollars. The Canadian Red Cross Society via the local branch donated bedding and clothing totaling 43 items.
The new Rossburn kindergarten will begin Monday October 23 in the basement of the new school section from 1 30 to 3 30 pm. Classes run Monday Wednesday and Friday with Mrs Elmer Brown as teacher for five year olds with December 31 birthday cutoff. Tuition is 1 00 per month. The project seeks a cup board table and chair for the teacher and invites all local children to enroll.
Local residents hosted a large Thanksgiving weekend gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kreshewski. Attendees included Alex Kreshewski Judy of Cowan Archie Fiel Daryl Bill Panko Rose Ann Bobby Harrison from Dauphin Shirley Haz el Kreshewski of Winnipeg M J Tokar Janice and Wally Tokar Yorkton Elaine Hutton Brandon visited her parents R N Hutton for the holiday weekend.
Reeve Sotas announces not to contest the election and thanks residents for cooperation during his term. He notes the Rossburn road project north and south is nearing completion and says he will bow out to Mr. Cleland, saving $200 in election costs.
Emily Myrtle Ellen Walker died September 27 1961 at Carman Hospital where she served as dietitian ten years. Born north of Rossburn she lived in Rivers Brandon Mears and Carman guiding farm work and hospital service. Funeral held September 30 at Douglas Funeral Home Carman with interment Greenwood Cemetery. Survived by husband three daughters ten grandchildren one great grandchild four brothers two sisters and predeceased by three brothers including one who fell at Normandy.
