Bears continue to disrupt Manitoba Whiteshell area
Black bears persist as a nuisance across parts of Manitoba, especially Whiteshell, prompting live-trapping and destruction efforts despite a special hunting season. During last summer 96 bears were removed. 65 were relocated, the rest killed. Officials cite feeding by people as a main problem and warn of dangerous encounters. Nomination Day on October 2 led to acclamations for Rossburn village councillors and Pelly Trail School Division trustees, with several wards listing candidates and some seats decided by acclamation.

Oakburn Collegiate began with a full staff led by Principal Dalby and teachers Bromilow Wasilka Lucyshen and Madtu z. Martha Chwaluk won the presidency after a Sept 9 campaign and Sept 10 election. Highlights include initiations for Grade 12s and a planned Oct 11 dance featuring the Popcorn Blizzard of Winnipeg.

27 Lb Pike Caught on Crerar Lake by Young Angler
A 27 lb 4 oz pike measuring 46 inches long and 19 inches in girth was landed on Crerar Lake with help from 12 year old Edward Maydaniuk. Rod and Gun editor Bill Robinson is expected to visit Neepawa for guidance on hooking large fish.

Rossburn Women’s Institute October Meeting Highlights
The Rossburn Women’s Institute held its October meeting on October 1 at 2 30 p m in the annex. O Canada and the Creed opened proceedings. Alice Lindsay donated the jackpot, won by Ruby Armstrong. the November jackpot will be donated by Olive McTavish. Mrs Cormack led the social portion and gave a talk on Manitoba’s Urban Associations. Two poems by Mrs Cormack, One Day at a Time and an Autumn Outing piece, were read. A lunch by Beryl Williamson and Mrs Moan concluded the event, which closed with Mizpah Benediction.

Game Bird Hunting Season Regulations Highlight
The 1968 game bird hunting season opens at noon September 30 and runs to November 30. Farmers may hunt on their land without a provincial license but need a Canada Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit for $2 at the post office. Daily limits include five ducks with possession limits of ten. Canvasback and Redhead capped at two daily or four in possession, Mallards at two daily or four in possession. Regulations will be strictly enforced.
Hospital Auxiliary Plans Winnipeg Convention Fashion Show
Rossburn Hospital Auxiliary met at Lola Doolan’s home with 16 members present. They will attend the Hospital Auxiliaries Convention in Winnipeg November 7 and 8 and present a Fashion Show at the luncheon on the 8th. A Tea and Bake Sale was organized, Jeannette Labossiere received a farewell pin, and Lola Doolan won the Hostess Prize. Next meeting October 22 at Millicent Sawchuk’s home with a Halloween party and a 25 cent costume fine for nonparticipants.
