MTS Tightens Rules to Fight Pay Phone Fraud
Manitoba Telephone System steps up action against fraudulent long distance billing from pay telephones. Starting June 1 1984 third number calls will be rejected 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. unless the billed party accepts the charge. Overnight a policy of non acceptance remains in force. Phase II extends daytime verification and bans third number billing on coin telephones without consent. Don Frame, MTS Security Manager, cites reduced losses of 120000 in Phase I and hopes for a further 140000 saving in 1984 85. Customers may still pay by coins collect or MTS Calling Card. The program does not affect home third number billing. Other telcos have similar verification programs lowering toll fraud.

Outbreak of Tuberculosis Strikes Lizard Point Reserve
Lizard Point reserve near Rossburn Manitoba faces ongoing tuberculosis problems with up to 10 percent of residents under treatment. 66 people are in preventive care or still affected, including 22 with active disease. Health officials say the situation is in a tidy up stage with about 40 cases in the area last year. Poor housing and overcrowding, lacking running water in many homes, and 19th century living conditions are blamed for the outbreak and related health issues. The band has begun improvements such as installing showers in the local school.

Sloughs and potholes are depleted, ponds in parkland are low, and duck brood numbers are expected to fall. Manitoba and Saskatchewan show severe water shortages. northern Alberta retains some water, with mallards and scaup abundant where carryover is normal.
