Social Credit names Beswatherick for Russell seat
C R Beswatherick of Russell was named Social Credit candidate for the Russell constituency at Angusville hall on May 14. The meeting heard Martin Keith of Govan Saskatchewan promote the party and its four basic principles while about forty attendees supported placing a candidate. Nominations pitted Beswatherick against Robert Turnbull, a 26 year old farmer from Binscarth, with Beswatherick winning the ballot.

Last Pioneer Link Broken By Death Of Mrs Andrew Barnesky
On Saturday May 16th Mrs Andrew Barnesky, last of the original Ukrainian settlers of Birdtail and Glen Elmo districts, died about 4 30 p m. Born 1857 in Luka Ukraine she lived under three tsars and six Canadian sovereigns. She married Matthew Kaysuke in 1873, had three children, later remarried Andrew Barnesky and moved to Canada in 1899. A longtime Greek Orthodox Church auxiliary worker she helped build the first Greek Orthodox church in 1927. Predeceased by second husband and several children she left three remaining children, Donna Pearl and Steve, plus 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Funeral held at Greek Orthodox Church with Rev Glishy officiating. buried Glen Elmo cemetery. Pallbearers named Wm Walko M Piasta Geo Hlagg George Strilesky Nick Mankir and John Semenuik.

Rural Council Sets May Meeting and School Addition Vote
The R M of Ross burn council met on May 2 with full attendance. A submission by-law was approved to hold a vote on a money by-law in Islay School District No. 733 for a one room school addition. Resolutions sought provincial grants for gravelling projects and culverts ordered from Shragges Ltd. An estimate by-law set 1958 tax levies at 63 mills. Bills approved and meeting adjourned to June 6 at 1 p.m.

Waywayseecappo Band Plans Election Meeting Progress
The Waywayseecappo Band held a pre election gathering at Waywayseecappo School on May 21 with Michael Twovoke as Chairman and Wilbur Cooke as secretary. The Chief and Council led discussions about the coming election and polling divisions. Debates addressed the Reserve’s subdivision and a proposed polling place, prompting a tentative follow up meeting on May 28 to invite candidates to speak at 7 p.m.

A Brief Tour of Rossburn
Rossburn enjoys a building boom as residents adopt Paint-Up Fix-Up. Nick Chopp builds a 30 by 70 foot frame on the former Manitoba Dairy and Poultry Co-op lot with 24 by 30 living quarters at the rear. The front use remains a mystery. Exterior stucco planned later. The Rossburn Dairy and Poultry Co-op moves into the former Tony Melnyk general store building, now altered for the egg business. Across the street Jim Harlow works on a new tin shop in the former flour mill after moving weeks ago. In the north end Bill Wladyka builds a modern home on land bought from A L Duncanson, with foundation done and frame to begin soon. Continued on back page.

Bantam Hockey Team Donates Grant to Ill Player
The Rossburn Bantam BB Hockey Team received a $25 grant from the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association and decided to give the money to Willie Zimmer of Angusville who played on the team last winter. Willie, recently discharged from hospital after rheumatic fever, will be glad for the gesture.

Village Council Holds May Meeting
The Council of the Village of Rossburn met in the Municipal Office on Tuesday May 19 with all members present. Minutes and the financial report were read and adopted. A by law on public health and sanitary conditions was passed. An Old Age Pension application was approved and three building permit applications were granted. A request was forwarded for追加 street lights and relocation of two existing lights. The next meeting is set for Tuesday June 23 at 8 pm.
