Severe dust storm and heat wave hit Rossburn Manitoba on May 12 forcing the local school to abandon classes after two o clock. Wind gusts over 60 mph dried fields and created thick soil dust in the building making study conditions untenable.
A letter from a Rossburn correspondent commends E H Harris for accepting a challenge to a public debate. The writer plans to settle officials and details soon and suggests the event occur before the by law re submission, which cannot be before August 15.
The Sandy Lake Game and Fish Association held a regular meeting in the school auditorium with A. Spragg presiding. Plans outlined include sponsoring a Fish Derby at Sandy Lake on Sunday May 18 and painting camp tables and benches.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs Walter Kaskiw of Kelloe on May 11 and a son to Mr. and Mrs Mike Barnesky of Birdtail on May 12 at Rossburn Hospital.
The hospital acknowledges donations including Birdtail W1 fruit juices Ross burn WL face cloths and soap Rossburn WA operating room towels and pillow cases Mrs Moffat candy and other items.
The Rossburn Cemetery Committee notes May poll appeared. caretaker working and grass growing. Donations from distant friends, including Vancouver and Edmonton, help cover caretaking costs. Plot care costs are $3 for a single grave and $5 for a multi grave plot. Residents may tend their own plots but should keep them clean. Donations should go to the secretary A L Duncanson president R N Hutton treasurer J G Stitt secretary.
FiS Frank Campbell of the RCAF urged importance of education in all careers and highlighted Air Force fields open to youth. Graduation exercises are set for Friday May 16 at town hall. Year Book sale planned at the door. A dance at the National Home will follow with Terry and his Terriers performing.
A May 17 bride elect Lydia Luhowy was honored at a Parish Hall shower on Saturday evening. She was escorted to a decorated chair as hostesses presented corsages to her mother and grandmother and gifts were admired before a lunch was served.
A shower for Mrs. Twerdochlib (nee Hazel Chegwin) was held at the United Church last Thursday May 8. She entered with escorts, received corsages, and gifts were opened by Jean Armstrong Eleanor Mitchell and Jane Johnston while Hazel expressed thanks for the thoughtful offerings.
Mrs M D Hamilton recovering in local hospital. Winnipeg visitors Mr and Mrs Les Baker spend time with Dick and family. Brandon and Shoal Lake guests drop by Hamilton home. Russell's Clarke Peden visits M D Hamilton. Stan Zenchhyshyvyn and Anne Wilkinson wed in Brandon on April 30.
Mr Ronald and Jack Coli of Toronto arrived by plane and spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs C A Menzies while visiting their father, Mr Kolochinski, a patient in Russell Hospital. Mr Ferguson attended a Presbytery meeting at Foxwarren Monday. Mr and Mrs John Klym with Mrs Nellie Klym spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Fred Prodan at Oak River. Mr and Mrs Mike Brykaliuk and family, Mrs Mike Werbowski, and Mr and Mrs Jim Carson spent Saturday in Brandon.
Miss Gloria Tutkaluk and Miss Diana Tutkaluk of The Pas visit Oakburn with their parents Mr and Mrs Mike Tutkaluk. Miss Lesia Antonation of Winnipeg stays with her parents Mr and Mrs Stan Antonation. Mr and Mrs Steve Luskey of Winnipeg visit Oakburn. Miss Josie Yanick of Winnipeg visits her parents. Brandon residents visit Oakburn. Mrs Teresko of Brandon visits with her daughter and son in law. The community extends sympathy to the family of the late Mr John Zelinsky who died May 9 at age 86. Funeral May 12 at the Roman Catholic church north of Oakburn.
The WA and WMS held a joint meeting opening with hymns and a theme Understanding One Another. Mrs. C. V. Gunn became Friendship secretary of Birtle Presbytery. Reports covered CGIT work and Japan articles. Plans to split expenses for overseas clothing relief were made.
The Village of Rossburn invites tenders for loading screening and hauling gravel for the 1958 season. Bids due noon May 20 1958. State truck types available. Lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted. Send to N Karmazenuk secretary treasurer marked Gravel Tender.
Mr and Mrs Bert Penonzek hosted relatives from Winnipeg visiting last week. Mrs George Bell joined Mrs J W Bell at the Birtle Presbytery meeting in Minnedosa on May 6. Families from McCreary visited Mrs Lechowicz. Sunday combined service for Christian Family Day featured Our Home A Household of God with readings by Faith Moulson and Patsy Rowland. Promotion certificates awarded to Betty Rowland, Shellie Ferguson, Beth Rowland, Faith Moulson, Deanne Chuchmuch, Patsy Rowland, Mildred Parabee and Enid McTavish. Beth Rowland and Faith Moulson received Bibles for 200 Sundays. WMS Plant Sale Silver Tea and Surprise Packages set for Friday June 13 at 8:30 p.m. Joe Chucnimech visit with Sandy Dates relatives. Angusville United Church Anniversary dinner planned for Tuesday June 10 at 6 p.m. sponsored by the WA Ladies.
The St Michael's Ukrainian Greek Orthodox church in Sandy Lake held a double christening this Sunday. Darcia Ann, daughter of Mr and Mrs P J Koltuisky, and Terry Kenneth, son of Mr and Mrs Peter Hnatuk, were named by officiant Rev J Rybalka. Godparents were Tilly Rystephanuk and Peter Elichuk for Darcia Ann and Marian Zdebriak and Peter Rystephanuk for Terry Kennth. Reception followed at the Koltuisky and Hnatuk homes.
