A Rossburn resident writes to explain why the town’s high mill rate of 70 arises from the total assessment and yearly budget. The letter argues that mill rate alone misleads, notes a 71 percent rise in assessed property value, and predicts a lower rate with the new assessment while total expenditures may not drop.
A provincial government delegation discussed the Russell-Erickson route, agreeing the road must be rebuilt to trunk Highway standards. The minister agreed to 100 percent summer maintenance until the No. 4 highway is finished, with municipalities paying a third of snow plowing costs, saving Rossburn area an estimated 2000 to 2500 dollars annually. Officials praised Mr. Clement and Ed Shust for hospital and local projects, hoping for grants to improve access to the Indian Reservation beyond the Rossburn Public Cemetery.
The Rossburn community schedules its third annual baseball tournament for June 10. It marks the first big outing of the year with plans discussed at an executive meeting held Thursday evening.
The Rossburn Review announces changes in ownership and staff roles as the editor, typesetter, proof reader, and pressman resigns and sells the publication. Harry Aylwin becomes the successor, with further details on page 6.
Harry Aylwin becomes publisher after purchasing the Review from John Hresavich. John remains associated and will stay in Rossburn. The change moves the paper from a one man shop to improve news coverage for Rossburn district and nearby towns. Continued on Page 6.
All Rossburn Consumers Co op members are urged to attend the annual meeting at the Town Hall on Monday June 7 at 8 p m President John Cormack calls it the most important gathering of the year to discuss the cooperative’s progress and future plans.
Winnipeg notes show new Agricultural Office hours effective May 1 to December 31 1954 from 9 00 a m to 5 00 p m Monday through Friday. The office will be closed on Saturdays.
Lillian Peikoff, born and educated in Rossburn, has died in Montreal at age 56. She passed away on Thursday May 1 and the funeral was held Sunday May 9 from Shaarey Zeded Cemetery. Rossburn residents extend sympathy to her relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. James Sherritt of Rossburn celebrate their golden wedding on May 24. They will host friends at home from 2 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM.
Rossburn credit union announces the first annual meeting of the district chapter to be held in Rossburn Town Hall on Monday June 21 at 8 p m. Provisional officers elected include P E McNabb chair and F Winstone secretary after a Strathclair committee meeting.
The Shoal Lake district hosts the District 4-H Public Speaking contest at United Church Birtle on May 27 at 8 p m. Winners advance to the Kiwanis contest in Winnipeg later in summer with prize money from the Winnipeg Grain Exchange. Stanley Jones will speak on Sizzle Sells the Steaks. Judges are Mrs. Max Moore Rev. Smith and Rev. Miller Entries due May 20. Public invited.
