The Rural Municipality of Rossburn has installed two new community wells at Olha and Vista to serve farmers and residents, aiding irrigation and fire needs. Olha well starts operations in two weeks. Vista well completes by month end with no user charge.
The Marquette Regional Health Authority completed a four meeting series in Rivers on May 5. District 2 covers Shoal Lake, Hamiota, Rivers and surrounding communities with Brent Fortune as chair and council members including Mary Gregory and Barry Clark. New programs and funding were announced for diabetes education, Baby First parenting support, preschool speech therapy, psychiatry and a Hepatitis B program, plus a proposed chemotherapy program for Neepawa Hamiota with a satellite site in Russell. Capital projects approved include Shoal Lake Strathclair Health Centre, Carberry Health Centre and East View Lodge replacement. Provincial grants totalling 39377 support regional tourism groups to develop new products and market local attractions. Industry minister Melvin Tweed notes ongoing funding aids employment for thousands and cites Pan American Games as a marketing boost. Parkland Tourism Association receives 3277 for a trade show display unit to showcase the region.
Students from 20 junior high and high schools attended the Western Region Peer Helpers conference held April 29 and 30 at the Russell Inn. Co chairs were Elaine McNabb Louise Lament and Petra Paradis. Attendees joined mini sessions on violent conflict resolution eating disorders grief and suicide prevention among other topics.
