4-H Public Speaking District Competition highlights
The 4-H Public Speaking District Competition at Russell Major Pratt School on March 20 featured junior and intermediate speakers from Silverton, Foxwarren, Russell and other clubs. Teresa Kieper and Michelle Pawluk led as top speakers, with alternates named, and all participants received certificates. The event promoted community projects including a Ukrainian church restoration with a July homecoming planned in Leech. A Regional Final in Roblin will occur April 21, 1979, with alternates stepping in if needed.

The Rossburn Ukrainian National Home Women’s Association Ivan Franko held its annual meeting on February 12, 1979 at Annie Strank’s home. Seventeen members attended along with four new members. Lena Tanasychuk chaired the meeting. officers elected were Mary Smychnik as President, Lena Tanasychuk as Vice President, Dora Sawchuk as Secretary, Winnie Danyluk as Treasurer, and auditors Winnie Danyluk and Caroline Antonin.

Rossburn Credit Union reported a strong 1978 year at its annual meeting held March 22 at the Angusville Community Centre. Assets rose to about 10.26 million with loans totaling 4.97 million. net profit reached 46,181.14. Board members re elected were Larry Chipelski Ernest Stefanuk and Jim Procyk with Merril Kilichik filling the unexpired term of Dr Lu.

Hydro rate increases concern village council
The Village of Rossburn council met on March 13 1979 at 7 pm with Mayor Rick Plaister and councillors Droscoski Kostecky Swintak Stefanuk presiding. Motions included approving last minutes, acknowledging a highway grant street addition, and applying jointly for a Hire-A-Student Grant. Evangeline Voychyshyn and Darlene Yurchuk attended the Provincial 4 H Leaders Conference in Brandon representing Shoal Lake 4 H District Council.

Manitoba allocates 105000 to fund up to 40 rural Hire-A-Student Job Centres this summer. The 14 week program provides salaries for centre managers, office costs, and local advertising for high school and university students seeking private sector summer jobs. Grants target 47 communities. about 2800 youths placed previously.
