The Rural Municipality of Rossburn increases its 1959 to 1960 assessment from 1,438,710 to 1,619,610 a rise of 180,900. Ward breakdown shows Ward 1 565,220 vs 459,810. Ward 2 464,090 vs 387,990. Ward 3 290,280 vs 288,410. Ward 4 300,200 vs 302,500.
Filko Kustiak died March 11 at his Oakburn home. Funeral held March 15 at St Theresa Roman Catholic church Oakburn led by Rev Mendyka. Pallbearers were sons Mike John and grandsons Joe Stan Pony Morris. Interment in Oakburn Farms Roman Catholic cemetery. Survived by daughter Mary McLymach and sons Mike John with six grandchildren. Raginski Funeral Home of Oakburn arranged.
A letter to the editor argues that current deficiency payments favor those with large past crops and that an acreage basis would spread benefits more fairly. The writer notes rural areas with poor yields would gain little under per bushel plans and urges fair reform, questioning politicians’ attention. Birdtail Subscriber.
Mr. and Mrs. John Klym left Wednesday afternoon for Winnipeg to spend time with Mr. and Mrs. Brian Brusegard and others.
William Andrew died at Rossburn Hospital after a long illness. Born in Fordyce Scotland in 1877 he moved to Canada in 1907 and lived in Vista and Rossburn. He leaves two brothers James and Alex and was predeceased by George and Jeanie. Funeral services were at Knox United Church with Mr. Ferguson officiating. Pallbearers listed. Interment in Rossburn cemetery.
Manitoba Social Credit league board, meeting in Brandon on March 18 1959, reaffirmed each constituency association may enter candidates. It pledged full moral support to any association entering social credit candidates and outlined a province wide long range campaign with radio broadcasts and field work led by president W J Tinkler.
The Rossburn Cemetery Committee reports spring is here and asks local residents to visit plots for upkeep. They note praise for improvements and remind former residents planning visits to spend a few hours assisting with walks and plot care. Annual care charges are listed as three dollars for a single grave and a higher amount for two or more graves.
Mrs J J Stitt marked her 92nd birthday at home with 44 friends visiting in the afternoon and 18 relatives in the evening. The celebration praised her health and happiness this spring and included gifts cards and a poem tribute printed in last week's Review.
Evangeline Karmazenuk, bride elect for April 11, was honored at a March 21 shower in the United Church Annex. Olvia Verbowski led a procession to a decorated chair, corsages pinned, and gifts distributed by Evangeline Strilesky Lillian Bereza and Verbowski. Ninety three ladies attended, with forty eight present, and a lunch followed the event.
One hundred seventeen dollars went to each of seventeen winners from Riverside Lions Club Bingo Game No 3. Winners span Manitoba towns including Carberry The Pas Boissevain Gladstone Manitou Emerson St Boniface Lynn Lake Carroll Ridgeville Glenboro Winkler and more. Rossburn Intermediates placed second at Elphinstone after a 7-5 loss to Elphinstone in the final. Erickson was shut out 7-0 by Rossburn. Orest Matiowsky exited in the first period with a head injury.
The Agricultural Society met in Municipal Chambers on March 19 with 14 members. Reports from A Forde and P Johnston. invitations to Shoal Lake guests to mail in April. several committees formed to plan anniversary events and promotions. prize list ads same as last year. meeting adjourned to March 26.
Mr. and Mrs. Ab Sherritt of Murrayville BC celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 15 with a church hall reception from 2 to 4 and a home reception in the evening. Friends from Rossburn district sent gifts and well wishes, including Jack Craig, Maggie Young, Annie Young, Mary Lockhart, Agnes Hatham, Earle Sherritt, Donna Sherritt, Jessie Peden, and Al Grant.
Twenty ladies gathered at Mrs. Wm. Stitt’s home on March 17 as the United Church W A entertained Vista W I with a St Patrick’s party. Whist winners were Olga Michaluk and Lena Shewchuk. consolation prizes went to Joan Baker and Marie Woycheshin. Scrabble high went to Mary Stitt with Florence MacPhail taking the consolation prize. The event closed with a lunch prepared by W A members.
The Rossburn Hospital Aid held its March 24 meeting in the Legion Hall with 12 members. Final payment on the electros cardiograph is due this month. Pajamas costing about 25 dollars were to be purchased for the hospital. Members volunteered to mend on future dates, and bingo is planned for April 15 at the National Home with prizes at Slow's Garage. Next meeting is April 27 at 7 p.m. in the Legion Hall.
The CGIT resumed weekly meetings after exams with all members present except Judy Huston. Mrs. McKnight and Mrs. Andrew led worship from Luke 24. The group plans an Easter party, will build a cupboard for CGIT books, and approved purchasing a baptismal font. An Easter eggs activity followed with demonstrations by Mrs. Ukrainetz and Mrs. Tanasychuk.
Mrs J R Steele of Timmins Ontario visited her parents Mr and Mrs Geo Danyleyko over the weekend. Her stopover in Salinas California followed a winter with daughter Marea a nurse at a large hospital. She toured historic sites across Mexico and the western United States including San Diego La Jolla Monterey Carmel and Carmel Mission Grand Canyon and the redwoods at Santa Cruz. Her January 7 departure from Toronto routed through Chicago Kansas City San Francisco Vancouver and Victoria then across the Rockies with stops in Calgary Regina Winnipeg and back to Toronto. She plans to return to Timmins by train on March 22.
