Rossburn Village Council OKs fire service funding plan

The March 10 1977 Rossburn council meeting approved seeking financial support from Rural Municipality of Rossburn for fire fighting costs. It set a truck rental fee at 100 plus 25 per hour, and firefighter reimbursements of 7 for the first hour and 4 thereafter. Other items include By-law 526 passage, Ellen Street dust treatment request, youth summer jobs, and current accounts totaling 30548.67.

4-H District Public Speaking Contest Held at Silverton Hall

The 4 H Public Speaking District Competition took place at Silverton Hall on Monday March 21 at 8 p m Judges were Lila Bily Julian Fredette and Dr Wally Wolfe Two Rossburn Sewing Sisters contestants Lori McKietiuk and Kimberly Antonin won in junior and intermediate divisions Theresa Kieper won junior with Lori McKietiuk as alternate Giselle Faford won intermediate with Janice Cochrane as alternate Betty Lyon won senior with Karen Barber as alternate Giselle Faford was the overall winner with Betty Lyon as alternate Winners advance to Dauphin on April 23.

NDP Hold Annual Meeting Names Birtle-Russell Leaders

At the March 14 1977 Birtle Russell NDP meeting in Rossburn Ray Spencer of Binscarth was elected president Ken Caldwell of Rossburn 1st vice president Gordon Harvey of Strathclair 2nd vice president Isabel Nicholson of Shoal Lake secretary treasurer and Roger Lowe of Shoal Lake Provincial Council representative Fifteen members were elected to the executive at large The group praised 1976 activities and Oakburn Smorgasbord dance with Premier Schreyer noting unity ahead of the election year A nominating convention agenda for Angusville April 22 with Premier Schreyer as guest speaker was adopted Claris Nicholson named membership chair Mike Sotas financial chair and Roger Lowe acting publicity director until the nominating convention

Silver Medal Award To Daniel Peech

Daniel Peech of Oakburn a Chef Training student at Red River Community College in Winnipeg won a silver medal in the decorated ham category at the Manitoba chefs competition held in Winnipeg March 13. Over 70 chefs competed across 20 categories with Red River College teams winning 11 medals including two golds. Medals will be presented April 17 at the Chess Ball in Winnipeg.

Whist Drive At Oakburn Winners Named At Pioneer Club

A Whist Drive was held at the Pioneer Club on Saturday March 19 with five tables. Ladies first prize went to Mrs. Mary Lazaruk and consolation to Mrs. Annie Gerelus. Gent’s prize went to Mrs. Margaret Smith with consolation awarded to Martin Kasprick. The next event is set for Saturday March 26 at 7 45 p.m. Everyone welcome.

Honourable Mention in Canada Writing Contest at Rossburn

Sandra Stitt and Donna Buternowsky of Rossburn Collegiate earned Honourable Mention in the 10th Annual Creative Writing Contest sponsored by Canada Permanent Trust. Their works titled Encounter With a Stranger and Echoes All That Remained were recognized. winnings and invitations were mailed as the March 18 event could not be attended.

Ladies Retreat At Rossburn United Church Draws 82 Attendees

A successful Ladies Retreat was held at Rossburn United Church on March 18 and 19. Eighty-two women registered with fifteen staying overnight. Guest speaker Mrs. Gweneth Jones of Winnipeg shared testimony and spiritual insight, inspiring many to commit to Christ. The event featured singing, prayer, fellowship, meals, and a book table by Elaine Lee of Russell.
