Overcrowding At Rossburn Hospital Highlights Space Strain

March figures show Rossburn hospital caring for 36 patients and 3 newborns, averaging 12 daily with 123 patients per day the week of March 11 to 17, plus four maternity patients overlapping beds. X rays total 26 people with 45 plates. Staff waste time moving furniture and patients to free space. A records room is needed to store medical and accounting records securely, freeing nursing areas for patient care.

Tax Levy Set at 50 Mills in Rossburn

The Rossburn village council met at the Municipal Office with Mayor Earl Mffat presiding and full attendance. Minutes and the constable's report were approved, the financial statement endorsed, and one Old Age assistance application approved. The 1956 levy was set at 50 mills, up 2 mills from last year despite a 45 mill shovel rate increase included in the total. An adjournment followed.

Successful Carnival Held Saturday at Rossburn

The annual costume carnival drew 350 to 400 spectators. Winners included Larry Perchaluk, Judy Huston, Patsy Moffat, Colleen Major, Gordon Williamson, Sandra Peden, Dawn Moffat, Elaine Ukrainetz, Mrs. Middlemass, and Mrs. Geen. After judging, an exhibition hockey game between Inglis and Rossburn ended 4-4 with Stank and Senter scoring for the locals.

At a well attended meeting Friday evening a decision was made to organize two local Chambers of Commerce under J. VonHagen’s chairmanship elections began. Manitoba Co op Volume Down as Stores Up in 1955

Manitoba Co-operative volume fell to 98,159,689 dollars in the 12 months ending July 31, 1955, a drop driven mainly by lower grain sales. Grain and Seed co‑ops accounted for 48,990,887 of 72,022,796 in marketing co‑ops, down from 63.5 million. Livestock co‑ops rose over 20 percent to 11 million, while Wholesale and Manufacturing declined by 1.5 million. Consumer co‑ops increased to 15.9 million. Total provincial membership reached 222,487, with many members in multiple co‑ops, especially in urban areas.

Mrs J J Stitt Celebrates 89th Birthday

More than fifty well wishers called on Mrs J J Stitt Saturday March 17 for her 89th birthday. She is one of the district's oldest pioneers and recalls events since arriving from Ireland in 1886 with wishes for health and happiness in years ahead.

Fire Shower for Mrs Kornyk at Ukrainian Home

A Monday night miscellaneous shower was held at the Ukrainian National Home for Mrs. Paul Kornyk who lost all in a recent fire. Lesia Chopp and Judy Huston performed on piano accordions. Mrs. Kornyk thanked the donors, gifts were viewed, games played, and Ukrainian Ladies Group served lunch.

Peden laid to rest in Rossburn cemetery on Birdtail Hill

Five years earlier on March 21 1961 a well known pioneer of the Rossburn district was laid to rest in Rossburn Cemetery on Birdtail hill. Robert Peden aged 72 years and months was buried on Wednesday March 14 1951. Mr and Mrs Neil Stevens of Brandon have taken residence above the Co op Egg Station in Rossburn. Oakburn curling rink members participated in the local bonspiel at Shoal Lake last week. Miss Shirley Yanick daughter of Mr and Mrs William M Yanick of Oakburn died at Shoal Lake Hospital on Sunday March 11. Bill Belbas had the misfortune of horses shot with a 22 rifle. investigations are underway.
