The National chairman reports last year the committee sent overseas 706 cases of clothing and bedding to aid less fortunate peoples. This month the Canadian Red Cross Society campaigns for $5,000,000 with a budget of $279,764 for overseas relief in 1951 including supplies for women’s sewing groups across Canada.
Air Marshall Curtis lauds the F-86E Sabre as the world’s top fighter after combat with Russians in Korea. Canadair in Cartierville builds Sabres for the RCAF as McNaughton Claxton praise Canadair’s rapid production and performance. General McNaughton, Defence Minister Claxton, and Ottawa officials visit Canadian facilities and staff chapters.
Dr. R. W. S. Urquhart reports 5000 Canadians trained in Red Cross standard first aid with 400 instructors. In 1950, 46,967 enrolled in swimming and water safety, 5000 more than any prior year, with 179,564 pupils over five years and 100,000 passing tests.
Mrs. J. J. Stitt is honored at a March 18 dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Stitt for her 84th birthday. The evening gathering at her home celebrated her as an early settler in good health. The community extends wishes for continued health and happiness and she thanks friends for cards flowers and chocolates.
Mr and Mrs Steve Woytowich of Menzie visited Steve parents Mr and Mrs Mike Woytowich. Douglas Brown recovered from wrist surgery at Brandon General hospital. Connie Hay joins nursing staff at Swan River 30 bed hospital. Community extends sympathy to the Peden family. Eight pupils tried curling in Rossburn and enjoyed it. Easter Service planned with youth choir directed by Mrs Alexander and Mrs L Hamilton. Mrs Alex Hrytsak returns to Oakburn after Winnipeg visit.
Special low rail fares to Brandon Manitoba from all Manitoba stations and from Prince Albert Saskatoon Moose Jaw and eastern Saskatchewan will run March 31 to April 5 for the Manitoba Winter Fair April 2 to 6. One and a half times the one way fare with a 30 cent minimum. tickets on sale March 31 to April 5 and April 6 for arrivals by 4 15 p m. Return by April 7 unless no service then first available train after.
Easter time chosen to distribute Easter Seals and aid Crippled Children. The campaign uses Easter Seals to support crippled children with charitable efforts and community outreach.
Robert Peden, 72, a long time Rossburn district pioneer, was buried March 14 1951 at Rossburn Cemetery on Birdtail Hill. He was born July 24 1878 in Molesworth Ontario and settled in Rossburn in 1879. He leaves wife Winona Easson three daughters a son and siblings. two sons predeceased. He served as Reeve and ran for federal and provincial seats. Funeral conducted by Pastor W B Eaton drew many friends with a large floral tribute.
