Seven year old Wawro Gerega passes away en route home

Wawro Gerega aged seven died suddenly January 29 while on the way to his Ontario residence. Born in Western Ukraine in 1888 he came to Canada 52 years ago, married Mary Driver in 1909, and farmed in Colony district near Oakburn. Funeral held February 5 at 10 a.m. in Dolony Ukr Greek Catholic Church with burial at Colony Cemetery. Survived by wife Mary a Toronto son Peter three daughters Jean Nell Kokoradz and Rose Dushnicky five grandchildren and out of town mourners. Funeral arrangements were handled by Raginski Funeral Home.

Funeral Rites For Robert John Brown

Robert John Brown aged 86 died at Rossburn Hospital on Thursday February 25 after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday at the Rossburn Town Hall with burial in the local cemetery. He settled in the district in 1880 with his parents and spent his life here. A full obituary will appear in the next issue.

Raisin Cookies Recipe of the Week

The W I Corner shares a raisin cookies recipe using shortening sugar egg milk oats and raisins with flour salt soda cinnamon nutmeg and powdered cloves. The method directs creaming sugar and shortening then adding egg milk oats and chopped raisins, mixing with sifted spices, and dropping spoonfuls on a buttered sheet to bake about 15 minutes.

Funeral Rites Held for Nick Guglick of Horod

Nick Guglick aged 68 died in Horod area on February 24. Funeral services were conducted at the Ukr. Greek Catholic Church in Horod with prayers the previous evening. He leaves wife Mary, son Mike, four daughters, and a brother. Pallbearers named from local families. Out-of-town mourners attended from Brandon and Winnieg.

High School Bonspiel Draws and Local Soccer Result

The High School hosts a bonspiel with teams listed by skip names across four squads. On February 25 Rossburn defeated Oakburn 2 1 with Stupinsky and Silewich scoring for Rossburn and Groshok for Oakburn.

Progress report on CKOS TV Yorkton station on Baldy Mountain

Yorkton Television Co Ltd reports confirming equipment production is on schedule for the Baldy Mountain station. The 500 ft tower fabrication is finished by the Oklahoma based Utility Tower Co. Painting due February 24 with shipment to Manitoba planned around March.

Rossburn Women’s Institute Receives Labossiere Talk

L Labois siere was guest speaker at the Rossburn Institute meeting with a talk on The Perly School Division. Enrollment rose from 6.6 percent in grade 12 in 1940 to 26.1 percent in 1959. about 550 students attend high school on the Pelly Trail. Donations supported Salvation Army Crusade for Camp Lahmuhle clearance, Hospital Aid, and March of Dimes proceeds. The Canadian Cancer Society plans an April drive and Bingo on April 1 in Town Hall. Ke ven Dixon and Audrey McIntosh won the raffle blankets and rug.

Britannica gift to Canadian high schools marks Education Week

Education Week runs March 6 to 13 with an Open House on Tuesday March 8 at 2 p.m. A gift of Encyclopaedia Britannica sets will be provided to each qualified Canadian high school. Over 1600 sets go to libraries nationwide as a donation from Encyclopedia Britannica of Canada Ltd. In large centres the gift is named after the school’s first principal. smaller centres honor a local contributor. Four centres in the Pelly Trail division Aglis Russell Rossburn Oakburn will benefit. Presentation may coincide with the Open House March 8.
