Government ends payment for jurors in Manitoba
NDP Justice Critic Gord Mackintosh condemned the Filmon government for abolishing the $30 per day juror fee for short service and warned it will hit working poor hardest. He argued juries must reflect the community and oppose elitism while Justice Minister Vic Toews called the rate an inadequate wage-earner compensation. The move, effective for six day average service, will raise financial hardship for jurors on minimum wage or low incomes.
