Oakburn Orioles win home 18 team fastball tourney

The Oakburn Orioles captured top honors in an 18 team men's fastball tournament at Oakburn on Sunday June 13. They defeated Beulah Warriors Minnedosa Plainsmen St Lazare Angels and Clanwilliam in the final. Arrow River beat Elphinstone Movers in the finals of the consolation. Gate attendance exceeded 600 as the Oakburn Recreational Centre thanked participating teams.

Board Members Elected At Meeting

Board members to organize the Parkland Harvest Festival and Rossburn Fair for 1971 were elected at a public meeting in the Town Hall basement on Wednesday June 9th. A nominating committee proposed a slate elected unanimously. A board meeting is set for Wednesday June 16 at the Municipal Office with Rovers offering help in signs and other tasks.

Scholarship Awarded To Former Rossburn Collegiate Student

Miss Lesley Steel daughter of Mr and Mrs Steel of Vernon BC has won the Pitt Fine Arts Scholarship and will attend the Kootenay School of Fine Arts Nelson BC.

Birdtail W I June Meeting Receives $200 Donation

The Birdtail Women's Institute met at Mrs. Freda Butler's home with eight members. They opened with the Creed, discussed minutes, treasurer's report, and correspondence. New business included a $200 donation to Rossburn Senior Citizens Home and a wool blanket for John Ryniak who lost his home in a fire. The delegate attended the Provincial Convention in Winnipeg while Mrs. Butler reported on the Inglis district convention. Jackpot won by Mrs. Mary Saley. Lunch was served.

Parkland Harvest Festival and Rossburn Fair Dates Set

Rossburn activities center on August 14 and 15 with a market for vegetables flowers poultry and handicrafts. A Rossburn reunion picnic in Bur naby B C invites former residents to join July 25 from 2 00 to 6 00 p m at Confederation Park off East Hastings North Willingdon Avenue.

Farm Home Destroyed By Fire In Ruthenia District

Fire destroyed the home and contents of John Obedniak in the Ruthenia district north of Rossburn late Thursday evening June 10. Rossburn Fire Dept arrived too late to save the structure and could only stand by to protect nearby buildings.

St John Ambulance First Aid Course In Rossburn

The St John Ambulance Standard First Aid Course held May 25 26 and 27 in Rossburn Town Hall proved worthwhile for attendees. Evening sessions drew 15 participants including 6 firemen 3 school bus drivers 4 nurses a secretary and a farmer. The course was interesting and enjoyed by all.

Oakburn Bike-a-thon a Successful Community Event

A windy Sunday May 30 1971 saw 36 riders from Oakburn including students teachers farmers and townsfolk travel forty miles toward Shoal Lake amid strong winds. The Rink Building Committee fed participants at checkpoints and a post-ride hot dog picnic concluded the day with pledges around 1300 dollars and trophies for top fundraisers to be announced later. Special thanks go to Garth Skrupa and Donna Skrupa who helped secure sponsors and joined the ride to support a closed in skating rink for Oakburn children.

Kitching Tops Golf Tournament

Kitching wins Rossburn Men s Golf Tournament with 68 in Rossburn Lake event. Local golfer dominance shown with 29 locals among 101 players from Russell Strathclair Birtle Brandon and other towns. Flight results feature Joiner Doyle Phyzacklea Leronowich and McTavish. L Mansell won low hidden hole and George Lawless high hidden hole. Joe Laxdal had longest drive.

Inter-Club Golf Match At Russell Ends In Narrow Russell Victory

Inter-Club golf between Rossburn and Russell clubs played Monday evening. Russell golfers won 6 points to Rossburn's 3, securing the overall margin in a tight contest at Russell.

This week Rossburn Elementary hosts twenty four Cecil Rhodes students with an equal number from Winnipeg staying in Cecil Rhodes homes. The exchange participants will be involved in activities and a full report on their experiences will be published.

Betty Ann Lion Named President of Women’s Intramural Sports

Betty Ann Lion has been named president of Brandon University’s Women’s Intramural Sports Program for 1971 1972 with student helpers assisting under Faculty Director Nancy Stanley. Betty Ann also placed second with 110 points in the Intramural Aggregate.
