Roessburn Golf Club Tourney Draws 71 Entries Champion Tony Melnyk

The Roessburn Golf Club Sunday tournament drew 71 entrants from Rossburn Russell Hamiton Birtle and other towns. Tony Melnyk of Birtle captured the championship title with standout rounds and secured the overall victory. Winners listed by flight include G W Robinson and Russ Ivey in First Flight Dave Cleland and A Sutherland in Second Flight Orest Smyciuk and M Sheerdown in Third Flight Adolph Verbowski and Sterling Veitch in Fourth Flight. Participants hailed from Rossburn Russell Hamiton Binscarth Birtle Foxwarren Sandy Lake Inglis Rivers and Brandon.

Library Conference Held at Russell Manitoba

The Manitoba Library Association held its 12th Provincial Conference in Russell Manitoba on May 31 and June 1. Displays filled Memorial Hall and a film Crisis in Library Manpower Myth and Reality screened Friday. The program featured Boris Raymond and John G Wright with Ruth Smith and Paul Hiebert discussing libraries and prairie literature. Attendees included Gerald Brown Nan Florence and Eileen McFadden.

Trudeau Plans Neepawa Visit

Rod Clement announced that Prime Minister Trudeau would land by aircraft at Neepawa on Tuesday June 11 at 9 45 a m. Clement said Trudeau abandoned regular itinerary to meet Marquette constituents, prompting a charter from Brandon. He noted Trudeau wants grassroots input from rural Western Canada.

Joint Meeting of Candidates for Marquette Seat

A Shoal Lake Chamber of Commerce sponsored event invites voters in the Western Marquette constituency to hear four candidates R Clement Mike Antonation Craig Stewart and Rev Donovan at Shoal Lake Auditorium on Wednesday June 12 at 8:00 p.m. The meeting precedes the federal election and urges turnout on June 25.

McAuley Defeats Rossburn Seniors 4-3 in Baseball Clash

In a May 29 game at McAuley the Rossburn Seniors scored 3 runs in the first inning but McAuley replied with 4 runs and held on to win 4-3. On June 2 Rossburn toured Gilbert Plains where Gilbert Plains won 3-0 in a tight contest.

Rossburn Auxiliary May Meeting Notes Centennial Projects Planned

The May 28 Rossburn Auxiliary meeting at Vi McKietiuk’s home reported 22 members donating books and toys for the hospital. A lunch for the hospital extension opening in June was approved. Plans included purchasing a frig and forceps as a Centennial project plaque, moving excess funds to a savings fund, and a June 15 tag day to raise funds. The next meeting is June 25 at Anne Slon’s cabin with casual attire allowed.

Antonation Named NDP Candidate at Marquette Nomination

Mike Antonation a 55 year old Shoal Lake farmer was chosen standard bearer for the New Democratic Party at the Minnedosa Legion Hall nominating convention on May 23. Only other candidate was Bill Yuel of Neepawa. He has long rural political ties and holds multiple local offices. Ed Schreyer MP spoke at the meeting.

Divisional Track Meet Cancelled by Rain Planning New Date

Russell hosted junior track and field divisions but rain halted events. The meet is rescheduled for Thursday June 6 after school. In softball, boys lost to Oakburn 17 to 7 on May 28. The girls game against Oakburn on May 30 was cancelled.
