Vista Women’s Institute Meets at Mrs Mac Phail Home

The Vista Women’s Institute held its regular meeting at the home of Mrs. Florence Mac Phail Thursday afternoon with 8 members present. Plans included a Whist Drive for charity on January 28 in the hall and a Box Social and Dance on February 10 featuring Corley’s orchestra. Mr. Donovan gave a talk with New Zealand slides, followed by a luncheon hosted by Loraine Hallid Elphinstone. A note mentions a Saturday league game at a nearby venue.

Copeland couple mark 25th wedding anniversary

Between 40 and 50 guests attended the 25th anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. J Copeland of Grand View. They received two hostess chairs and a white chenille bed spread. Attending were Caldwells Roy Plantes Bill Maxwells John Plantes of Rossburn and Mr. and Mrs. R Emerson Isabel Copeland.

Oakburn 4H Sewing Club Parents Night in Shoal Lake

Members and leaders of the Oakburn 4H Sewing Club hosted a Parents Night in Shoal Lake on December 17. Sponsored by Shoal Lake 4H Calf and Sewing Clubs, the event featured speedier reports slides and films followed by lunch.

Mrs. Wilson and her son hosted an At Home for boarders and friends at the King George Hotel on New Year’s night. On December 28 Rosie Peikoff married M. Hoffer of Tribune. Alex Brown won a sewing machine in a key contest by I. M. Caldwell. Rural Council noted John McPhail as reeve with Councillors Brown, Huston, Nyezak and Varmey. Northern Elevator at Vista closed for the season. Vista Day School prize went to Olive Hamilton and Sunday School prize to J Halliday. Jas Drysdale moved from Harrison’s Shop to J Harlow’s on South Mountain Ave.

Cub Scout Pack Reorganizes For 1961 In Rossburn

The Rossburn Wolf Cub Pack re organizes for 1961 with 24 members. Sponsored by the Canadian Legion the group admits boys aged 8 to 13 with parental permission. A bottle drive is planned to raise funds for equipment ahead of training canvassing every home in Rossburn on Saturday January 21.

Credit Union Board Meeting Report

The Rossburn Credit Union held its regular board meeting on January 16 with attendees from Credit and Supervisory Committees. Eight new members were accepted. The Credit Committee reported 14 loans totaling $7,865 approved in December. The Supervisory Committee found the books in good order during a year end check. Managers urged bringing in all passbooks for the January 30 audit. Financials show a gain over last year with volume of £65,868.90 or $18,281.20 increase and undistributed earnings to members of $2,670.84. Next board meeting will follow the annual meeting planned for early February.

Rossburn events chair a series of BINGO nights at the Town Hall basement. Sessions on January 25 and January 20 offer multiple games with proceeds supporting the Canadian Institute for the Blind and hospital aid. Mrs Agnes Antonation Pioneer resident dies at 87

Mrs Agnes Antonation a Pioneer resident of Oakburn district died at her home on January 2 at age 87 Born in Western Ukraine in 1873 she came to Canada 60 years ago and settled near Osha Later moved to Olha store in 1939 with her son Stanley In 1947 they retired to Oakburn The funeral Rosary and service were held at Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Oakburn Burial followed Raginski Funeral Home in charge Pallbearers included Peter Nychek Steve Melnyk Mike Antonation and others She left three sons Stanley Peter John and three daughters Lena Stack Sophie Nykoliation There are 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren Her husband predeceased her in 1928 The community extends condolences to the relatives and friends.

Lasiuta Rites Held for Oakburn Resident at 73

Wasyl Lasiuta, born in Western Ukraine, died at 73. He came to Canada in 1902, farmed near Oakburn, and lived in Oakburn village for 13 years. Survived by two sons Nick and Pete, three daughters Mary Zatylny Kay Luhowy and Anne ZatylIny, six grandchildren. Greek Catholic funeral at Oakburn on Jan 12. Pallbearers named. Rae's Funeral Home arranged.

Local club tom thumbs defeated shoal lake seven to two with three penalties issued. Scorers included rossburn two and shoal lake one. leading point getters were lorne ducharme sixteen, brian brown fifteen, glenn carson twelve, david cheg win and dennis brykaliuk five each, russell brown and dwain lawless four apiece.

Mrs Mackedenski 85 Dies After Short Illness at Vista

Mrs. M. Mackedenski of Vista Manitoba wife of Trachym Mackedenski died January 3 in Rossburn Hospital after a brief illness at 85. She came to Canada in 1876 and settled near Vista then moved to a farm south of Vista in 1919 with sons Alex and family. A devoted member of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church she helped in social activities. The funeral was at Oakburn Parish Hall and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic cemetery with Raginski Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers included Bill Yaskiw John Yaskiw Harry Yaskiw George Lazaruk Bill Hullick Nick Hrytsak. She is survived by Trachym and three sons Mike Joe Alex of Vista, daughters Nettie Drul of Oskburn Katherine Moisyshyn Windsor Ont Ann of Detroit Mich 15 grandchildren 11 great grandchildren.
