The government merges Family Allowances and child tax credits into a monthly tax free benefit. Most families under 67 000 dollars income receive some benefit with extra support for low income working families up to 500 dollars a year. Canada will spend about 2.1 billion more on federal child benefits over five years.
A Manitoba school division notes a court ruling allowing religious exercises only if a parental petition covers a sufficient portion of the student body. Thresholds vary by school size, require annual petitions, and apply to several named schools and districts. Controversy continues as divisions follow Education Department guidance.
Blizzard conditions on December 24 caused a seven car pileup near Russell with estimates of up to 15 cars involved. Constable Cook of the Russell RCMP said the count was closer to seven and no injuries were reported. The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. on Highway 45 three miles east of Russell. visibility was 10 to 15 feet as traffic slowed and others did not. Damage was light and the highway was closed briefly before reopening around 8:00 p.m. as the storm eased.
Linda Chegwin and Janette Peart urged Rossburn council to find a new recycling depot site and improve public involvement. They proposed forming a joint group with RM and village reps to align markets and methods while Parkland West offered business development support with a $75,000 loan cap and a $120,000 regional inventory study budget.
