Rossburn W I January Meeting Review

The W I held its January meeting Tuesday at 3 p.m. with 21 members attending. Mrs. Viola Stitt became president, with Mrs. Ethel Langridge as secretary, following talks on the founding of the First Women's Institute and Burns life. A Burns poem was read, songs were sung, a jackpot prize went to Mrs. Alexander, and a light lunch followed hosted by Mrs. E Menzies and Mrs. M Armstrong.

W A and W M S Held Combined Meetings in Rossburn

United Church W A and W M S met jointly on January 10 1966 with good attendance The W M S met first with two hymns and scripture readings Those unable to attend birthday teas will have one soon in the United Church Annex Recipes and ads must be handed in by January 21 to begin a Cook Book publication A St Patrick s Tea and Bazaar is planned for March A delicious lunch was served by Mesdames Williamson McFeeters Lehnston and H Smith

The past week enjoyed fine weather as temperatures ran about eight degrees above normal. Readings indicated consistently mild nights and clear skies across the region with little precipitation and pleasant daytime highs.

Rossburn Bonspiel At Shoal Lake This Week

Two Rossburn links take part in the five event bonspiel at Shoal Lake this week. Nick Stupinsky of the Hospital Committee visited patients at the local hospital on Ukrainian Christmas Sunday and gave gifts to patients and staff. Rossburn Boys Calf Club plans a one day bonspiel in Rossburn on Saturday January 20. Vista open air skating rink flooded and ready for season skating and hockey. Mrs Pete Chegins visited relatives in Horod.

Through an oversight the high school rink item omitted the lineup. TM l Stitt skip Eddie Carson third Orest Smycniuk second and Paul Mamalygo lead deserve a share of the glory.

Funeral Rites For Joseph Bereza

A funeral service for Joseph Bereza was held Tuesday January 10 at the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rossburn. Joseph died January 1 and was born in 1910 in Ressburn Municipality, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mike Bereza who arrived in Canada in 1900. He lived much of his life on the family farm in Ruthenia district. Survivors include four sisters and two brothers: Mary Kodlesky of Birdtail, Gladys, Nettie Man of Russell, Zelma Parasiuk of Neepawa, Andrew of Portage la Prairie, and Bill of Rossburn. Pallbearers: Andrew Bereza, Bill Bereza, Charlie Kodlesky, Louis Kodlesky, Mike Parasuik, and Cliff Hamilton.

Rossburn Dominates Rolling River 16-5 in Hockey

Rossburn routed Rolling River 16-5 before a fair crowd at the local arena. Scorers for Rossburn included Bob Crookshanks, Allan Boychuk, Doug Joiner each with one, Bob Brown with two, Delroy Stitt with three, and the majority by George Heindle and Steve Strank. The club shows strong form and crowd appeal.

Manitoba Winners Named in Weed Control Essay Contest

Manitoba entrants claim top prizes in the North Central Weed Conference essay competition. Elaine Pankin, 15, of Miami wins $25 for best Manitoba essay, with Donna Davidson, 13, Birtle, and Clarence Jack, 16, Strathclair, earning $15 and $10 respectively from the National Grain Company. Alberta’s Jeane Kievet of Lacombe wins a $300 scholarship for high scoring regional essay.

Wolf story on a farm near Slobodian

On Tuesday December 20 Joe Wolski, while loading straw at the George Slobodian farm about a mile from home, faced a wolf attack as two of five wolves turned on him and his dog. He struck one with a pitchfork, driving the pair away before Slobodian could fire, and the wolves vanished.

Prize List Revised At Agricultural Society Meet

Rossburn The Agricultural Society met Tuesday evening January 10 with 17 present. A motion to hold Casey Shows at the Fair and contact Ray Little for added attraction was passed. Trophy To Be Presented To A Birney

The Agricultural Memorial Museum Association will hold its annual meeting at Portage la Prairie City Hall at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday January 18. A trophy awarded to Albert Birney of Angusville at the Threshermen's Reunion in October will be presented, funded by J. S. McMurphy of McConnell, with plans to televise the presentation. Also at the meeting the deed for land donated by Thomas Carruthers to the Provincial Museum Association will be transferred to the museum association.
