The Rossburn village council met in the council chambers with mayor and three councillors. The Court of Revision opened, one complaint heard, business assessment adopted for 1957, regular meeting held, January financials and constable report adopted, a $15 Salvation Army grant approved, rest room and fire hall plans presented, adjourned to March 19.
Local ladies curling club held a two day bonspiel with 12 rinks. Results list winners and runners up across three events with participants from Rossburn Oakburn Shoal Lake and Angusville. Awards include first and second places for each event led by Mrs Klym and Mrs Drosdoski.
Winnipeg reports a proposed 2,000,000 unconditional grant to municipalities and local districts to total 31,500,000 in provincial aid. The per-capita grant aims at about 2.30 per ton, roughly two mills on average, with variation by local assessment. Provincial Treasurer C. E. Greenlay says flexibility will aid roads, bridges, welfare, health, education, and other needs.
Beverley Gunn of Winnipeg spent the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs C Gunn. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs J Cormack who celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on February 27. Ted Arnold of Deloraine is the new section foreman in town.
In Rossburn the Pentecostal Church mission circle led Sunday services with Mrs. Miller presiding. Mrs. D Sherritt offered prayer, Mrs. Woods read a poem, and Mrs. Miller urged using God given talents. Other members sang, spoke on shining light, and described WMC work at home and abroad.
The Cleland rink remains undefeated as it captures the Grand Challenge Citizens Event and Grand Aggregate in last week’s local open bonspiel. Results list eight teams reaching the finals in each event with multiple prize placements including Smyeniuk Drosdoski Rapley and Wilson in the Citizens Event and Rapley Senko H Drosdoski among Hotel Event winners.
Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Wilson of Saskatoon celebrated their golden wedding with more than 100 friends at the home of their son Oren Wilson. Their children Grace Ford Oren Wilson Eric Wilson Gerald Wilson attended along with six grandsons and a granddaughter and great grandson. Prime Minister L. St Laurent and Premier T. C. Douglas sent congratulations. Out of town guests included W Eric Wilson Bobby Detroit Calgary Brandon Winnipeg and Murrayville BC.
Shoal Lake Bantam tied 4 4 in Elphinstone then lost 4 3 in overtime at Shoal Lake in a two game total goal series. Rossburn players Bryan Kowal scored five goals and Huston added two goals and two assists. The piece notes local talent and urges fan support at games.
The Rossburn Hospital Aid held a February meeting at Mrs. Anne Slow's home with 10 members and 2 visitors. Mrs. McIntosh was named Civil Defence delegate. February mending was done by Birdtail W I and Rossburn United Church. W A will mend in March. The group plans a Bingo on March 13 with member donations and other gifts accepted. March 25 meeting at Mrs. Anne McIntosh’s home at 8 p.m.
Mrs. H Yaskiw won the $50 prize after her name was drawn in the Quaker Flour Contest. She answered a quiz question correctly by identifying Labrador as part of Canada’s Newfoundland. The editor noted many guessed Quebec.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Maryniuk of Rossburn on February 22 at Rossburn Hospital.
On February 19 an Interprovincial Farm Union Council submission was presented to the Government of Canada in Ottawa. About 80 farm people from five provinces joined thirteen council members including Manitoba officials Radolph Usick and Wm Shwaluk, led by chairman Jim Patterson of Neepawa.
Vivian Cleland Sonia Silewich Miss Stitt and Elaine Cleland led a ladies bonspiel win in the Grand Challenge while Angusville girls visited for a spirited broomball match at the arena drawing strong crowds. Plans for the spring curling bonspiel and graduation trophy presentation are noted along with student council efforts.
