Calf Club Bonspiel Highlights Rossburn Teams at Strathclair

The Rossburn Calf Club sent two teams to a one day bonspiel at Strathclair on February 4. Don Stitt led the first team with John Williamson Leslie Taylor and Paul Ukrainetz. Bert Mitchell captained the second with Keith Stitt and two pickup girls. They lost the Calf Club opener 8 3 to Strathclair but won the Seed Club opener 7 6 over Moline. Bert Mitchell’s squad edged Don Stitt 6 4 in the Seed Club after beating Stitt in the Calf Club, but Strathclair ultimately won the finals. A Rossburn curling team also sent players to Winnipeg. In hockey, Rossburn High School boys played at Russell on Feb. 4, beating Inglis 6 1, Russell 11 4, and finishing second to Russell with standout Gary Lindsay scoring five goals.

Manitoba Legislature Opens February 14 With Speaker Vote

Manitoba's 23rd Legislature will open February 14 as Premier D L Campbell announced. A coalition caucus is set for February 7 before the house convenes, with the first order of business the election of a Speaker. The former Speaker, Hon. Robert Hawkins of Dauphin, did not run in the last provincial election.

Hospital Aid Society Holds Third Meeting

The Ross burn and District Hospital Aid held its third meeting in the Club Room on Tuesday evening January 3st with good attendance. Mrs. Crookshanks and Mrs. W. Stitt were chosen to represent the group at Local Board Meetings. The bingo fundraiser brought in 18.30 after business. Lunch concluded the evening. The next meeting is set for Monday February 27 at 8 pm with a Whist Drive to follow. All are invited to support the hospital.

Oakburn Board of Trade Holds Annual Meeting

Oakburn Board of Trade held its annual meeting at the Ukrainian National Home Hall on Monday evening January 30 1950. Elected officers include President Jos F Mychalyshyn Vice President Mike Jazaruk Secretary John Maliation and Work Committee members Stanley Borodie Mike Borodie and Paul Mychalyshyn. Andrew Skavinski was named town constable for the coming year. Reeve Knox Shust of Shoal Lake attended and urged fire protection for the community.

Oakburn Ice Carnival Proceeds Reach 800 Dollars

Oakburn held its Annual Carnival on Tuesday January 1st with judging of costumes and races at the rink. Miss Elsie Antonauson was crowned carnival queen and Princesses were Alice Woytowich Oral Kalynovich. Prizes went to George Holubusky Leonard Matiation Kenneth Mychalushyn and Misses Iena Matiation Olga Borodie Darcia Mandziuk. Ticket prizes went to Helen Prykayko R Seddon and Steve Lazruk. Proceeds from the dance and raffle plus 592 from Carnival Queen candidates brought totals to over 800 dollars.

Unusual Calf Triplets Born on Maxwell Farm

A cow on Mr. Wm. Maxwell’s farm gave birth to triplet calves. All survive and are several weeks old, an unusual event as most calves do not live past a day or two. The note hints at rapid herd growth through such births.

UNICEF Appeals for Funds to Aid Destitute European Children
