Manitoba settles 63 county court districts into 15 and reduces Queen's Bench to five. Western district centers on Brandon with offices in Brandon Killarney Virden Minnedosa and Russell. Otto Elvers vacates County Court clerk post after long family service. bailiff Howard McIntosh also retiring after 26 years.
Foxwarren beat Rossburn Angusville 10-4 in a playoff game at Rossburn on Tuesday. The MAHA series continues with game two at Foxwarren on Saturday evening. Both Rossburn and Angusville can take pride in their teams regardless of the outcome.
At the Sandy Lake Home and School Association meeting in the Collegiate Auditorium, Mrs. Anne Kristalovich demonstrated the Cuesenaire Method with 12 primary students, introducing colored rods to reveal numerical relationships and basic principles. Scholarship awards were presented to Sylvia Desiatnyk and Doreen Kristalovich, with Mrs. Peter Coulson delivering the presentations and nominations made for the Provincial Convention in Winnipeg.
Mrs Mary Fiel of Rossburn Manitoba aged 89 born in Poland in 1876 came to Canada in 1900 and married John Fiel. Funeral held January 25 at 10 a.m. in Rossburn Roman Catholic Church with prayers January 24. Interment in local cemetery. Survived by two sons Peter Shoal Lake and Mike Rossburn two daughters Joan Lazaruk Oakburn and Helen Lazaruk Pine Falls 21 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. Pallbearers named Raginski Funeral Home Oakburn managed arrangements.
The Rossburn Institute and Rossburn Women's Institute met in the annex on Tuesday February 2. O Canada and the Creed were sung, Valentines exchanged, and Mrs Lindsay spoke on the school situation ahead of the March 9 vote. Mrs Wilson Stitt won the Ruby Armstrong jackpot. lunch followed a Queen tribute.
The Manitoba Women's Institute is a voluntary, nonsectarian, nonpartisan, nonracial group operating locally and nationally. Members are rural women who work to improve homes communities and the country. Objectives include better living standards and national progress. the first WI formed in Stoney Creek in 1897 and in Manitoba in 1910.
Two hoot Noles teams were chosen for the Pelly Trail Bonspiel events. Rossburn boys rink led by Wayne Carson includes Patrick Hamilton Harvey Baydock and Ronnie Taylor. Rossburn girls skip Loretta Hrysak Cecilia Rambeitz Gloria Kostesky Cheryl Scarrow represent. Bonspiels set February 6 for girls in Rossburn and February 13 in Elphinstone. A March of Dimes Candy Sale funded March of Dimes efforts and proceeds from a hockey game. Drama Night and Dance scheduled for February 5 at Town Hall.
Edwin Strank of Swan River spent the weekend visiting with his parents Mr and Mrs Wasyl Strank.
The Oakburn Consolidated S D No 255 met January 20 with 56 ratepayers present. Peter Hrysak was nominated chairman and Mrs. Stanley Antonation secretary. Paul Michalyshyn sought another 3 year term while John Peech replaced retiring trustee Frank Zubrak. The 1965 School Board lists Paul Michalyshyn as chairman, John Muzylewski vice chairman, with Tony Chwaluk Tony Slon and John Peech as members.
Local figure skaters who joined last year's Ice Carnival under Miss Pat Carr were treated to a show and lunch at Russell Tuesday. The group, with new skaters, have trained for this year's Ice Carnival set for Saturday March 13, and an invites Valentine Dance with music by the Neepawa Varitones at Rossburn Town Hall Friday February 12.
Windy cold conditions persisted into Thursday then milder weather arrived with snow and light drifting. January averaged five degrees below normal with snowfall four inches below average. Record extremes for the week ending Feb 4 at Rossburn show high 38 and low 34 below zero on several dates.
