Eclipse Feb 26 Schools to close on day of eclipse

Pelly Trail School Division board met January 22 with all trustees present. They approved Joyce Staples as para-professional at Major Pratt School LaC effective January 3 1979, replacing Boonstra Stanchuk. They donated $50 to Warren Mochnacz Western Manitoba Science Fair and noted staff reductions for fall term 1979 at Angusville Binsearth Elphinstone with split K to 6 staffing.

In-service Day Planned at Russell Manitoba 1979

The Pelly Trail School Division boards invites trustees teachers and the public to an inservice day at Major Pratt School Russell Manitoba on February 5 1979 starting 9 00 a.m. The program includes information sessions from the school board superintendent local Manitoba Teacher s Society and service explanations from Child Development and Support Services as well as a look at the new Department of Education K 6 Mathematics Curriculum and teacher led sessions with lunches available.

Birdtail Womens Institute January Meeting Report

The Birdtail Women s Institute met at Mrs Mary Saley s home with seven members present. They opened with the Creed, did roll call, and read minutes and the treasurer s report. They pledged a donation to the Ability Fund and planned a pot luck supper at Mrs Barbara Kostesky s home for members and families. The jackpot was drawn by Karen and won by Karen Bergeson. The next meeting is set for February 1 at 2 00 pm at Mrs Alice Hrubeniuk s home. Appreciation is extended to Ron and Barbara Kostesky for hosting the supper. Afterward they played whist with Ladies High Mrs Myrtle Maxwell Ladies Low Mrs Olga Deydey Gent s High Lee Ann Butler Gent s Low George Schmidt.

Wheat Board Report Opens New Advisory Committee Session

The January 22, 1979 Wheat Board Advisory Committee meeting introduced new members and tackled the Quota Review Committee report. The panel's findings, though public, are not policy yet, with mid March set for deciding if any recommendations will form 1979 80 quota policy. Donn Mitchell and another member seek farmer feedback before the next session.

Oakburn rink tops Rossburn Ladies Spiel

The Rossburn Ladies Bonspiel over January 26 to 28 drew 12 rinks including 9 local, 2 from Foxwarren and 1 from Oakburn. Finals Sunday saw Oakburn win the First Event with Janet Zemianski taking top honors, and Rossburn dominated the Second Event led by Lorna Veitch with Jean Mervyn also placing.

Rossburn Game and Fish elects new officers

The Rossburn Game and Fish Association met at Alex Cleland's home with 12 members. Officers elected: President Gordon Ament, Secretary Otto Elvers, Treasurer Rowatt Veitch, Public Relations Ed Kreshewski, Charlie Brown, Alex Cleland, Vice Chairman Bert McTavish. They planned Rainbow Trout stocking at Cleland's lake and urged stocking Rossman Lake by Mines and Natural Resources. A party licence for two was proposed and elk season to follow deer season. Meeting adjourned.

Rossburn Mayors Report Seeks Rail, Lagoon, Drugstore Initiatives

The mayor notes the CN line to Neepawa via Carberry was abandoned December 22 1978 and a temporary lifting order is inadequate for Rossburn Subdivision. A January 18 1979 Oakburn meeting formed a committee to retain the branch and add it to the Basic Rail Network. Manitoba Hydro again hikes rates 15 percent for 1979, requiring an extra 0.8 mill street levy with another 15 percent planned next year. Lagoon work is largely complete. seeding and fencing will lower total costs. The council seeks guidance on attracting a practicing druggist with four inquiries pending and faces nonresident fees at the skating arena as operating costs rise. The village questions lowering Manitoba resource prices compared with Alberta.
