Extra trunk fat linked to diabetes risk study finds
McMaster University anthropologist Dr. Empke Szathmary and assistant Nasha Holt studied 157 adult Dogrib in the Northwest Territories testing glucose tolerance and measuring body fat. They found hyperglycemia in 10 percent, with all hyperglycemics showing disproportionately more trunk fat, especially among men, suggesting fat distribution as an indicator of diabetes risk. The Rae village showed the highest rate, linked to lifestyle changes after outside contact. Health and Welfare Canada funded the study.
