A lyric memory recalls a small brown feathered singer by misty riverbanks whose twilight hymn lingers. The elf-like bird serenades the setting sun with a golden bell voice, its haunting melody remembered in harsh winter as a plea for spring.
George Skotlas born in Western Ukraine in 1874 died November 27 at Hamiota Hospital. He settled near Elphinstone, Manitoba after moving to Canada about 60 years ago, married Nellie Driver, farmed until 1955, and was survived by two sons Peter John and three daughters Mary Anne Sophie with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Oakburn and at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Colony.
The Ladies Committee of the Roman Catholic Church held a Tuesday bingo with many prizes donated by parish members. Winners included Mrs. M Bart for chicken, Terry Stefaniuk for towels, and Mr. Jake Zimmerman among others. cash and assorted gifts were also awarded to numerous attendees.
Out of town mourners attend the service with relatives listed from El lross Sask Wynyard Regina and Dauphin along with Birtle and Hamiota. Names include Sophie Katchur Nick Katchur Russell Katchur Diane Katcher George Pohorelic Mary Pohorelic Rosyth Pidd Nester Pidd Victor Pohorelic Mary Pohorelic Nick Pohorelic Richard Pohorelic Steve Kokorudz Nellie Lasuita Mike Lasuita Rose Dushnicky Albert Weselak and more.

A December 3 shower at Oakburn Parish Hall honored Janet Zemianski daughter of Mr and Mrs John Zemianski of Oakburn. The event featured corsages, a decorated entrance table, surprise balloon chair, a nurse theme wagon gift, and songs and poems. Also noted was the death of Mr Reg Brown in Winnipeg with funeral at Harding.
The Red Cross reports its annual drive raised 375 dollars. Volunteers produced 10 shirts 10 nightgowns 10 knickers 10 blouses 10 skirts 10 long pants and knitted 3 pounds of wool into sweaters and mitts for relief shipments to Morocco Pakistan Hong Kong and Chile. Emergency aid reached 64 Rural Manitoba towns including Rossburn due to fire loss. Acknowledgments go to numerous volunteers and a request to return remaining articles by Dec 10.
