Manitoba ministers vow to shield municipalities from new tax
Manitoba Rural Development Minister Jack Penner and Urban Affairs Minister Gerry Ducharme pledge to defend municipalities against adverse effects of the proposed federal goods and services tax. They cited three days of meetings with provincial and territorial ministers and said towns should not have to raise property taxes or face service cuts. The ministers noted 1987 federal commitment that municipalities would pay no more under the GST than the existing sales tax and warned long term rural development requires local control and cross level coordination.
