Rossburn teen agers publish a plea to parents and town leaders urging the creation of a youth centre. They note idle buildings like the club room town hall orange hall and curling rink could host wholesome activities and sports while giving teens a space to develop ideas and energy.
Stella Baydock and Peter Hyska exchanged vows at Ruthenia Church on August 12 1948 at 10 30 in the morning. Rev R Zakrewski officiated as attendees Sophie Bereza Mildred Baydock Bill Huska and Joe Bilanka stood by. Guests later at the Silver Beach Hall reception and a short honeymoon in Winnipeg preceded their return to Rossburn.
Mrs R A Dychachowski 76 of Rossburn died in Winnipeg August 23 after a week there. Born in Western Ukraine she came to Canada in 1904 and lived in Mears district. She is survived by two daughters Mrs Mike Silewich and Miss Mary Dychachowski and three sons Alex Vancouver Matt Winnipeg and Tom Selsgirth. Funeral today with interment Mohyla cemetery.
Rossburn High School will begin the fall term on Wednesday September 1 instead of Monday August 30 according to a notice. The delay was due to longer than expected time needed to finish preparations and students are advised to note the new start date.
A long list of six year old boys and girls starting school this term includes Reena Paisner Len ard Dutkywich Edwin Collins Ray McIntyre Calvin McFarlane Ray Peden Irvin Yaskiew Jerry Yarmey Carol Griffith Merna Smycniuk Olvia Verbowski Elsie Bucklaschuk Delmer MecFeeters Gertrude Anne Mitchell Dorothy Murphy Joyce Misko Florence Coughlan Jean Andrew Bobbie Stitt and Shirley Kershuski.
Fifteen calves entered by the Rossburn Boy's Calf Club produced a net $2007.00 after 14 were shipped to Winnipeg with Alex Kershuski keeping his calf. Norman Mitchell won first prize for a 755 lb calf sold at 30c per lb. John Mitchell second with 680 lb calf at 26c. Keith Stitt third at 24c and 725 lbs. W. Cameron fourth at 23c and 780 lbs. Other exhibitors included Tom Hereghan, W. Cleland, S. Cheguin, D. Joiner, A. Kiez, B. Carson, K. Caldwell, P. Ukraitetz, and Leslie Taylor. Prizes awarded to all exhibitors.
Mrs. Gordon Bell of Cartwright Man is a patient in Victoria Hospital with a slight concussion and fractured skull from a nine step fall. Her condition remains critical but doctors expect discharge in about two weeks. Mr and Mrs Peden traveled to Cartwright Winnipeg and Rossburn, returning last Tuesday. Mr Bell relieved Bank Manager Toland during holidays.
Nelley John Hamilton died in Glen Hospital Vancouver B C on Sunday August fifteenth. He was born October fifteenth 1897 in Rossburn, son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Peden Hamilton. Survived by wife Mae and daughter Sharon of Vancouver, also brother Robert of Kelowna and four uncles two aunts in Rossburn. He died exactly ten years after his father.
Two Oakburn residents sustained serious injuries in separate incidents. Steve Manuliak suffered a broken back and multiple broken ribs after becoming entangled in hay slings on a northeast Oakburn farm and was taken to Brandon hospital. Frank Manuliak, a Cockshutt implement agent, received a badly lacerated arm while starting a new combine on Joseph Annotations farm and was transported to a Winnipeg hospital.
