Village Council Holds August Meeting

Village of Rossburn council met August 15 with full participation. Topics included school by law minutes, service restoration for Lloyd Duncanson, drainage work for Jas Cherwonick, fire equipment tour, Foamite availability, Skating Rink Fund debentures, curling rink title error, cell in Municipal Building, Mountain Road grant, and routine bills. Meeting set for September 19 at 8 p.m.

Rural Municipality Council Meeting Notes in Rossburn

The Rural Municipality of Rossburn council met at the Municipal Office on Saturday August 5 with all members present. Three old age pension applications were approved, a road through D Danyieyko's farm was authorized for W Strank to reach his property, one school requisition for closed schools was approved, and bills were approved for payment. The council adjourned to meet again on Saturday September 2, 1950.

Public meeting urged for Rossburn school unit coalescing

A meeting of the School Trust ees of Rossburn and surrounding districts and interested persons is urged in the Rossburn Club Room on Tuesday to discuss forming a larger school unit across Rossburn Russell and Silver Creek municipalities.

Oakburn Woman Dies in Russell Hospital

Mrs. Teenie Dowalatek of Oakburn died at Russell Hospital on August 16 after a week of illness. She was 52. Funeral services led by Rev. Mychaluk were held August 18 at the Roman Catholic church in Oakburn, with burial in the cemetery north of town. Survived by two sons Barney of Oak River and Frank of Oakburn and six daughters, with husband Victor Dowalatek predeceased her three years ago.

Foundation Started For Memorial Arena

Work began this week on the Rossburn Memorial Sports Arena foundation with about a quarter of cement work done. Volunteers dug footings and trenches, many locals helped, and others hired workers to assist. The project seeks timely completion before harvest, with trusses arrived from Boissevain and lumber from Swan River, and materials ready except nails and aluminum roofing.

Voting Friday On New School Heating System

A by law to raise seven thousand dollars for installing a new heating system at the Rossburn School goes to a vote this Friday August 25 in the Rossburn Village office from 9 am to 5 pm. All resident ratepayers in the Rossburn school district may vote and married couples share a vote if each spouse’s property assessment exceeds eight hundred dollars. The notice argues the new system will cut fuel and labor costs and improve student and staff comfort.

Hospital Aid Holds August Meeting and Plans Purchases

The Ladies' Hospital Aid met on August 14 with 23 members. They decided not to furnish beds, instead funding a nurses sitting room and dining room, roller blinds, and a much needed operating table. September teas are planned and $58.75 was raised from the Aug 26 tea. Next meeting is Sept 25.

Three men jailed for Kresge safecracking attempt in Saskatoon

Mallette, 32, received four years in Prince Albert penitentiary for his role in the July 29 in Saskatoon safecracking at S S Kresge. Brent 22 of Vancouver and Lerochelle 24 of Lachute Quebec each got one year in Prince Albert Jail after pleading guilty. The trio was caught in the act by Elmer Carson store assistant manager.

Rail strike updates and limited newspaper delivery plan

Nationwide rail walkout prompts brief radio and newspaper bulletins. The Free Press and Tribune enjoy bus-delivery contracts to Rossburn, with first class mail arriving Monday Wednesday Friday and departing Tuesday Thursday Saturday. No parcels or newspapers will be carried by the special delivery vehicle.

Rossburn School Reopens for 1950 51 Term

The Rossburn School opens Tuesday September 5 at 9 am to begin the 1950 51 term. Students aged six by December 31 may enroll. High School students may obtain required textbook lists from Principal Mr J Murphy.
