The Village of Rossburn council met on August 17 with Mayor Earl Moffat and councillors Wladyka and Antonichuk present. Minutes were read and confirmed, the financial statement adopted, and the constable's report filed. One Old Age Pension application was approved and two building permits granted. Bills were paid and the meeting adjourned.
New aluminum post office boxes installed in the Rossburn office by carpenter Otto Elvers and postmaster Jack Stitt. The modernization brightens the lobby and improves appearance, with keys distributed and patrons adjusting to the new box locations.
A very heavy thunder storm swept the northwest portion of the area on Tuesday evening centering over Glen Elmo. Authorities estimate at least 1.5 inches of rain with light hail. Reports indicate some grain may have been flattened by the downpour, though exact details were not yet received.
Lukinski welcomed a daughter born August 9 1954 to Mr and Mrs Walter Lukinski. The Andrew family welcomed twins a son and a daughter born August 12 1954 to Mr and Mrs Doug Andrew.
A family reunion gathered August 8 on Bell Bros lawn with attendees from Winnipeg Russell Snyder Grandview Croll Angusville and Oklahoma including Gordon Westmacott Ema Keatting J D Peddie J Ware May Turnbull Archie McCallum Arthur Turnbull Kathy Turnbull and others.
The Department of Agriculture reports harvesting starting in southern areas with uneven yields and quality. Late seeding, moisture issues, rust, heat, and drought reduce overall cereal returns versus past years. Swathing began late July near Gretna Winkler and Neepawa, while Ridings Mountain northward see little harvesting this month.
Nickie Kalyniuk wins the Rossburn School Scholarship of 100 dollars after achieving 77.1 percent on the June Depart mental Examinations. He plans to complete grade 12 at Rossburn Collegiate with continued studies. Contributions to the fund come from multiple organizations including the Women’s Institute and Canadian Legion.
Local families and visitors are noted throughout Birdtail. C. Palmer and C. Brown hosted gatherings with several Winnipeg visitors and Camp Borden guests. Elaboration includes Elizabeth Palmer staying with her aunt, multiple visits to the Cleland and York households, and Victoria holiday plans by the Baird family.
The community resumes classes on August 25 with a short morning session. Non resident enrollment is halted due to heavy Grade 9 and 10 numbers. Proposes two new High School rooms and a composite school unit centered on Rossburn with outside districts joining to share costs and funding. The non resident grant covers only $7.50 per pupil per month.
Bernice Hogue of Strathclair visits the Carson home this week. Ray Cameron returns from summer school at Tuxedo and will teach at Long Plains Indian School near Portage la Prairie. Manley Karmazenuk and Viola LaRocque return to Carman after holidays with Manley’s parents. Miss Bray and Bill Sacharko of Winnipeg visit Rossburn area. Bill Huselak of Selkirk visits Chas. Derlago. Levite Bartkin spent holidays at Dauphin camp returning Saturday. John Checkowski of Selkirk visits relatives around Rossburn this past week.
Elphinstone community launches a drive to build a covered skating rink at the fair grounds. Donations come from the Elphinstone Legion W I Student Council and Greek Catholic Church with active support from committee members led by Jack Morton and Clayton Hunter.
A Fish Derby will be held at Fish Lake on Sunday August 22 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Prizes will go to the contestants catching the largest Wall eyed Pike and the largest Perch.
Three youths from Angusville join campers from across the province for a week at M F A C Camp Clear Lake. Each day begins with a lake dip and ends with an Indian Pow-wow and awards. The camp promotes world citizenship through a UN supper, a Co op store, and supervised activities for swimming crafts and games.
