Fatigue or stomachache may have caused Premier Campbell to lash out in the legislature. The House debated a bill allowing a timber-area swap with Manitoba Pulp and Paper Company. Conservatives led by Errick Willis protested, arguing the swap violates protections.
The Manitoba assembly hears the principle of disposal by public auction opposed by McDowell Harrison and Lissaman with Premier Campbell leading a chaotic session. The bill passes by a two to one margin amid table thumping as debates shift to federal road aid and health insurance plans.
The Rossburn Review letter to the editor criticizes the Rossburn RM Council for approving a wage of 60 cents per hour for a laborer and 15 cents per hour for a team of horses. It questions maintenance neglect, tire damage, and buried culverts, arguing the low pay and lax oversight harm road conditions and farmer initiative.
Official figures from the Dominion Bureau of Statistics show Roseburn with 586 residents: 291 males and 295 females. The Rural Municipality of Rossburn totals 2,054 people with 1,135 males and 919 females.
The White Cross Guild of the Winnipeg General Hospital sponsors a Rag Drive from May 10 to June 10. Communities are urged to help and the hospital benefits. rags will be collected and delivered by the Rossburn Transfer trucker. Drop rags at the central depot the John Deere shop, ready by May.
At Rossburn Curling Club annual meeting on March 31 Bert Mitchell was elected president succeeding Norman Major. Don Holmes was named vice president with E Caldwell as secretary and Bill Silewich as treasurer. Nine members joined committees and a draft of curling fees for 1952 53 was approved for January 1 to January 5 1953.
Manitoba's Society for Crippled Children urges readers to identify crippled children who need help. Easter Seals drives raise funds for treatment and medical care for over 300 children, underway March 16 to April 13, with 50 000 envelopes mailed to homes. Call 538 Broadway Winnipeg for details.
The Rossburn Review will stop accepting advertising on the front page. The change follows Manitoba Division Canadian Weekly Newspaper Association guidance. Subscribers will get a full page of news with advertisers receiving equal exposure on non front pages.
Over four hundred people attended a free show sponsored by the National Grain Company in Rossburn Hall on Monday April 7. The program opened with a comedy and a film on Banff and Lake Louise followed by a National News Reel on chemical weed control. The main feature Prairie Conquest traced the wheat story from Red Fife in 1841 to Marquis and Thatcher varieties, highlighting western Canada’s development and the roles of Howard Dales and Don Reid.
An open meeting at the Rossburn Clubroom heard Manitoba Federation of Agriculture leaders urge farmers to express views on renewing the International Wheat Agreement. A resolution asked negotiators to secure a floor price of 1.80 and a ceiling of 2.35 with domestic wheat priced to cover farm costs. About 35 farmers attended.
The Rossburn Juvenile Baseball Club held its annual meeting on Friday April 4 in C A Menzies office. John Mitchell was elected president and Mel Stitt was re elected as Secretary Treasurer. Raymond Karmazenuk became Vice President. The Financial and Transportation committee includes Keith Stitt Frank Melnyk and Elwyn McFeeters. Howard McIntosh is appointed coach and manager.
Middlemass was re elected along with Andrew Kiez serving as official score keeper. The club discussed needs for better equipment and decided to purchase new gear soon. It was decided that each member should pay a small fee for use of the equipment.
The editorial notes unofficial reports of a late month timetable cutback on the CN R line with no Wednesday or Thursday passenger trains. It argues inadequate service and competition from trucking and Greyhound necessitate daily mixed trains and daily mail service to sustain traffic and business.
Between six and seven hundred people attended the Rossburn branch opening of Direct Furniture Store over a Friday and Saturday. Dennis, general manager for Rossburn and Winnipeg stores, thanked local supporters and praised the Rossburn Review for its advertising impact.
