The Catholic Women's League of Oakburn sponsored a successful Amateur Night on Saturday in the Oakburn Parish Hall. Twenty contestants showcased talents with Oakburn High School Girl's Choir winning first, C.K.D.M. Playboys second, and Ukrainian Young People's Association Choir third. First in popularity were the Catholic Ladies' Choir, Gary McLennan, and the Ukr Young People's Choir. Donations supported a worthy cause.
Final standings show Boys A League led by Johnny Ryshytylo with 19 points and the Winners Team including Ryshytylo, Lussier, Fowler, Hamilton, Kawka, Berney, Genovy. Boys B League top scorer Donald Ament with 14 points. Winners Team includes Ament and six teammates. Girls A League top scorer Lesia Kaban with 12 points. Winners include Kaban and Tanasychuk. Girls B League Sonia Belinsky leads with 11 points. Winners include Belinsky and teammates. Exams have finished and results are awaited.
The United Church Women held their regular meeting at Islay School on Tuesday March 23 with seven members and one visitor present. Devotional by Lil Thompson centered on Easter. President Ethel Brown reported on the meeting for presidents in Hamiota. Next meeting date May 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Isabel Miller’s home with F Stitt preparing the devotional.
The 1st Rossburn Scout Troop met on Wednesday March 31 presenting earned proficiency badges to scouts not receiving ham radio lessons. The agenda included basketball pairings Cardinals versus Eagles and Beavers versus Ellis. Cub meetings opened with the Cub Promise and a prayer led by Scoutmaster E Stefaniuk. Proficiency badges were awarded by Major Les with Don Charney and Robert Stupnisky among other attendees.
