New Year, Sept 27. The World reports Spain is placing extensive contracts for railroad material and machinery in the United States. About 1000 cars are offered by an American car and foundry firm for use by Compania Del Norte and the Bilbao Santander line. The Trubia gun factory will be equipped with Yankee machines and tools. Large electrical orders are being placed in the United States.
In Becrae G. O. on Sept. 28 the campaign for governor begins with local speakers only. Col Kilbourne’s grandfather founded the city, which was named upon its first settlement. No outside talent is invited and Col Bryan will not be asked to speak nor will there be joint content with Governor Nash and Col Kilbourne.
Czolgosz, the man who killed President McKinley, arrived in New York this morning under the sheriff and twenty trusted deputies. He collapsed and was carried into the prison, terror struck, and will stay in the state penitentiary until the week beginning October 28th, when he will be electrocuted. This is his first breakdown, and he seems to sense the end is near.

Tomas Estrada Palma receives the indorsement of all Cuban parties for election as Cuba's first president. Former head of the Cuban Junta in New York, Palma endured loss, prison, and self denial for independence. He spoke five languages and once served as Honduras Postmaster General. He now returns to Cuba after teaching in Orange County New York. He remains poor and devoted to his homeland.

Mr Frank Chinckley of Bangor Maine meets Capt G P Ahern head of the Philippines forestry division in Washington to discuss Luzon and Mindanao forest exploration.
