Two masked men robbed Woodburn Bank of about 3000 at 2 PM in Woodburn Oregon with shots fired but no injuries. The thieves fled toward the Pudding River bottoms as a nationwide posse mobilizes. a citizen named Red Williams was shot in the leg during pursuit.
Coroner’s jury investigates Glendale tragedy where a burned body was discovered under a pile of ties near the railroad. A hat with matches and hobnailed shoes suggest an old miner. a tramp jailed in Roseburg may hold clues. Blood stains indicate a struggle and the body was hidden after the killing.
Portland May 2 Ex U S Senator John M Thurston defending Senator Mitchell expects his client to be found innocent of all charges from the late Federal Grand Jury He predicts no trial delays and says Mitchell is eager to proceed toward a June trial while cautioning that any delay would not be caused by Mitchell and his colleagues in the Senate.
Gaonsho Pags May 2. A touching incident during Easter celebrations shows General Linievitch stepping from his tent to kiss every soldier lined up before him. The gesture moves the troops to tears and reinforces their loyalty as Linievitch reorganizes army departments. Staff Captain Shaberski reports thousands of Chinese bandits under Japanese leaders beyond the Mongolian frontier.
The railroad outlines a $35 000 plan to upgrade Roseburg facilities with roundhouses, cold storage, new yard tracks, pits, and water column, plus 15 miles of track between Riddle and Merlin and 32 miles Roseburg to Glenbrook to be ballasted. It will renew 200 miles of track between Portland and Ashland with 44 pound steel and replace wooden structures with steel bridges across key routes including Cow Creek, Santiam river, Willamette near Harrisburg, West Fork Cow Creek, Evans Creek, Rogue river, and multiple trestles as part of a longer-term modernization for the Portland San Francisco overland service.
In Champoeg Oregon on May 2 1843 a rare Northwest campaign ballot counted 102 voters with no repeaters. Jo Meek campaigned for Uncle Sam and watched the tally as his side won by two votes marking an election without repeaters.
Chicago reports widening Teamsters strike with governors urged to send state troops. Police add 500 officers to guard wagons while employers cut planned loads to 600. Violence erupts as a caravan passes downtown causing injuries amid arrests for federal injunction violations.
Henry W. Miller, indicted January 31 with Frank E. Kineart and others for conspiracy to defraud the government in timber land locations, pleaded guilty in U S District Court. Judge Bel linger suspended sentence, and Miller posted 2000 as bond while remaining in custody. Nickell, a Medford publisher and former U S Commissioner, along with Hogue and Kincart, face pleas or demurrers as trials proceed.
The week's cool weather slowed crop growth with several frosts damaging tender vegetables and some fruits. Wheat oats rye and barley grow well while corn and potatoes face frost injuries. gardens slow due to low sunshine. meadows and pastures stay good. lambing nearly over. sheep and goats shearing above average. tree fruit mostly injured by frost with peaches pears and cherries hit hardest. berry yields look promising.
Following a strike confrontation at Washington and Wabash streets, 12 were severely injured. Edward Boswell, mistaken for a strike-breaker, was beaten near 26th street and Stewart avenue. Dode Scott and Walter Martin were wounded, and Frank Curry reportedly knocked out. Police arrested four men and two others were wounded during the chaos.
Edward Smith the San Francisco tax collector in default is in custody in St Louis awaiting officers. He admits a shortage not exceeding 56000 and claims no others were involved. Blanch Smith, jailed with him, confessed their four year relationship and said he entertained friends with stolen funds. She recalled a September onset and a Hot Springs trip before his departure.
The first Oregon strawberries reaching Portland came in April from Myrtle Creek grower J A Willis, two crates totaling 48 pounds. L S Coon of Dillard, often the first to market, followed by a day with a shipment on April 25, while past years show mid May arrivals.
A well preserved skull from the goat sheep elk family attracts attention in the Plaindealer office window. Discovered by A E Crouch and John Lehnherr timber cruisers on the Coast Range summit about 12 miles south of Camas Valley. The skull shows two strong horns and a large brain cavity. It is over an inch thick and partly petrified. Jaw and cranium are massive for its size and researchers have not yet classified the ancient skeleton.
Nan Patterson faces a tense day at the Tombs as jurors drift toward acquittal. Court instructions urged fairness, focusing on whether Patterson killed Young, not on past life. A first ballot showed nine to three in her favor as crowds gathered outside the Park Row area.

Babies have a dedicated day with prizes and events organized by Dan McAllen. The California building, a Greek cross with four Spanish mission wings, showcases extensive Golden State exhibits.
