Mrs Jane Stanford dies by poisoning in Honolulu

Honolulu reports Mrs. Jane Stanford died after a dinner in her hotel room from suspected strychnine poisoning. Coroner notes possible poisoning. bicarbonate soda and capsules. Stanford founder era at Palo Alto paused as details unfold. Stanford University activities halted in respect.

General Stoessel Receives Tepid Welcome in St Petersburg

General Stoessel arrived at 9 30 this morning and was greeted by War Minister Sakharoff and Admiral Ziolotti on behalf of the admiralty. Hundreds, mostly women, crowded the station while Stoessel, whose hair is said to be turning white, was cheered and presented with flowers. He and Mrs Stoessel proceeded to the residence of Lieutenant General Prince Viasemky. Few officers attended the station and the reception showed lukewarm enthusiasm.

Senators Expelled Over Bribe Scandal in Sacramento

The California Senate adopted a committee report urging expulsion of Senators Emmons Wright Bankers and French for accepting bribes. Upon adoption the house moved to formally expel the accused as French and Bankers were unanimously expelled. Emmons and Wright faced later voting on their cases.

Military Wagon Road Lands Valuation Bill Passed

The House passed Representative Hermann's bill directing the Interior Secretary to value lands previously conveyed to Oregon for the Eugene City military road within the Klamath Indian reservation. It seeks to determine portions allotted to Indianes, improvements, and sale or exchange terms with the California & Oregon Land Company.

W S Chandler Hart In Motor Accident

Marshfield Oregon February 28 W S Chandler manager of Coos Bay Roseburg Eastern Railroad on a motorcycle returning from Beaver Hill with Ira Chapman struck by a cow on the track near the Marshfield drawbridge. Chandler knee was cut bruised head mildly, Chapman bruised but not seriously hurt. Doctor Horsfall aided him and no serious outcome expected. Chandler also heads Beaver Hill Coal Company a noted Pacific Coast coal man.

Cottage Grove prepares for a Woodmen of the World district convention on the 8th with reports indicating a large attendance. Woodman Hall offers commodious facilities including a reception room dining hall and kitchen to host the gathering after two previous conventions in the past two weeks.

Oregon Ship Damaged by Fire off Crescent City

The steel steamship Oregon bound for Portland and San Francisco put in at Crescent City with cargo afire and passengers safely transferred to the Del Norte. Fire began yesterday afternoon 15 miles southwest of Crescent City, crews fought the blaze as the ship listed, but all aboard were saved and the Oregon, a 2335 ton vessel built in 1877, remains afloat under charter to Portland and San Francisco Steamship Company.

Steamer Oregon Reaches Eureka After Rough Coastal Run

The Steamer Oregon arrived in Eureka at 8 30 this morning after leaving Crescent City yesterday afternoon. She will be beached on the mud flats for the day. The vessel can navigate under its own steam and completed the voyage down the coast unassisted. The fire aboard continues to smolder.

Yamhill Citizens Form Petition to Refer House Bill 370

In McMinnville Oregon on February 27 a large courthouse meeting organized a petition drive to refer House Bill 370, which carries over one million dollars for state institutions. M B Hendrick elected permanent chairman and H L McCann secretary. Voters oppose the normal school portion and seek separate appropriation bills.

Rich Strike in Famous Greenback Mine Near Leland

A crosscut on the 11 foot level reveals a free milling ore vein 12 feet wide in the Greenback mine near Leland. Prospector Browning and Hannum opened the mine in 1900 sold to Moffitt & Smith of Denver who outfitted it and worked to great depth. They produced over half a million dollars and recently sold to Brevoort of New York for 400000 cash.
