Judge W. W. Cotton Chosen to Succeed Judge Bellinger

Washington reports Attorney General Moody announced W. W. Cotton will be appointed Federal Judge for the District of Oregon to succeed the late Judge Bellinger. Cotton, 45, noted for maritime law expertise, has long served as a railroad lawyer in Oregon and Washington. He will qualify September 1 after disposing of pending cases and land fraud trials.

Railroads Seek Injunction Against New Freight Rate Law

Eighteen railroads in Rancas City Missouri petition a federal court to stop the board of railway commissioners from enforcing the maximum freight rate law effective today. They claim the reductions averaging about two percent are confiscatory. a temporary injunction is expected to be granted.

Cottage Grove June 15 The city council let a contract to George Les for grading and graveling a principal street. The price is 1900 and includes grading and graveling. The street leads to the county road and repairs are needed. Further improvements planned to improve overall street conditions.

Portland June 15 pioneers of Oregon gathered at Guilds Lake to view the Exposition. The event featured a Pioneer Association session in the Auditorium with remarks by Captain A C Applegate and President Goode, plus music and tributes to Dr. John McLoughlin and Moses Love. Drain Normal School Sees Staff Elected for Next Year

Drain June 15 The executive committee of the Drain Normal School board met this morning and arranged funding to continue the school next year. President Dempster’s resignation was presented and accepted. Elected for the coming year were A L Briggs as president O C Brown as vice president and principal of training Sibyl Koykendall M B Signs and Mrs Ella Brown with positions to be assigned and two vacancies to be filled.

Weston State Normal School to Suspend Operations

Pendleton Oregon June 16 From all indications it is almost inevitable that the State Normal School at Weston will suspend operations for two years disband its faculty and scatter students. Already 4000 borrowed money has been used and board members face personal responsibility but prefer to avoid further involvement, making temporary abandonment likely.

Murderer Dodson Sentenced to Hang in August

Grants Pass Oregon June 17 Andrew Dodson the murderer of William Dunlap was today sentenced to be hanged August 11. Dodson and Andrew M Ingram who plotted the murder will go to Salem shackled together in charge of Sheriff Lewis and deputies. The case raises doubts about commutation to life and involves dodson’s weakness under Ingrams influence with Ingram the alleged mastermind.

Great Irrigation Canal Opened In Nevada

Hazen Nevada June 17 Mrs Frances Newlands wife of U S Senator Newlands broke a champagne bottle over the headgates of the Truckee river canal two miles above Derby as the water began to flow into the canal marking the first irrigation system built under the national reclamation act. The Truckee Carson Canal runs 31 miles from Derby to above Leterville delivering water to Carson valley signaling a new era for Nevada and the west.

Branton Pleads Not Guilty in Attempted Murder Case

In Eugene circuit court John Branton pleaded not guilty to attempting to kill John Fletcher. Trial set for next Tuesday at 1 p.m. Branton allegedly induced Fletcher to take out $3000 life insurance in Branton’s favor with the W O W order and attacked him on a lonely winter night returning from lodge. Branton lost an eye but survived.
