The Des Moines jury returned a guilty verdict for Letsom Balliet of Baker City Oregon on charges of mail fraud. The trial, delayed by a previous juror death, centered on intent to defraud through circulars mailed to Eastern Creek residents. Balliet faces up to eightteen months in prison and a $30 fine.
CorraGse Grove June 7 The Oregon and South Eastern railroad from Cottage Grove to Bohemia advances rapidly. Connection with the S P Co line sits 300 yards south of the depot as track is laid from that point. Friday morning cars with rails ties and bridge timbers were dispatched to the new line. Tie bridge carpenters frame timbers while grading gangs push ahead. Grade nearly finished from town to Mosby Creek bridge about four miles. rolling stock expected soon.
A San Francisco bulletin reports the Oregon passenger wreck near Redding at 11 10 PM killed Engineer White and Fireman Van Tassel. Investigators say a switch was opened by a removed bolt from the switch rod, found twenty feet from the track, with the nut missing. Robbery speculated but no passengers harmed.
The Penowver estate filed for probate in Portland Oregon. The 20 acre land portion north of Columbia Slough road is left to Samaritan Hospital with trust to benefit patients.
