The Douglas county Good Roads Convention closed with an evening session in the opera house. Experts urged thorough drainage and proper rock layers for durable dirt roads. Officers and local vice presidents were elected for the county organization.
Ed Violet a well known logging contractor long in Booth Kelly Co and later with a Gardiner lumbering outfit on Schofield creek was crushed between two logs Friday and died instantly. He was a young married man, son in law of Wm Landers of Cottage Grove, whose funeral was held Saturday. An Odd Fellow and respected young man, this marks the second Cottage Grove boy killed in Gardiner camps within the past year as Wm Allen died in a similar incident.
The two year old boys named James Thompson and Frank Reed were charged with larceny and escaped from jail Tuesday night before being recaptured at Drain the next day. They appeared before Recorder Orcuit Friday and were bound over to the circuit court for trial with bail set at $300 each or remain in the county jail.
New York reports John D. Rockefeller donated 10 million dollars to the General Education Board, chaired by Robert R. Ogden, to endow higher education in the United States. The fund may receive additional gifts, with 10 million slated for Oct 1. Income will support colleges and universities nationwide.
