In Baltimore a 21 year old girl married Mrs Emaline Rauch then lived with her a week before her true sex was found. She had posed as Herman G Woon for six years and faced a charge of obtaining ten dollars by false pretenses. She reportedly drank chewed and smoked like a man and had left her home with a newborn child to travel to Norfolk and Baltimore in disguise.

In St Helens Oregon July 2 August Schieve was hanged for the murder of Joe Schulkowski. About 200 spectators watched as the black cap was placed and the trap sprung at 1204. Doctors H R Chiff and McLaren of Rainier declared him dead shortly after.

Portland reports John Flax, alias John Bennett, the Sedro-Woolley man accused of murdering Nora Fuller, has been freed after pretending to be the wanted killer. He spent about $500 on a spree, then caused his own capture by declaring in a saloon that he was the murderer, prompting arrest and police intervention.
Maprio July 1 reports mounting quarrels between King Alfonso and Dowager Queen Marie his mother. The king’s bouts of temper and threats to expel her from the palace have created a scandal amid servants.
The first fatality of the anthracite strike occurred at William A colliery in Duryea. Antonio Guisupe, an Italian, was shot by a coal and iron policeman behind the stockade. Reports vary on motive with some saying he walked near the stockade from Scranton, others saying Italians attempted to scale the fence amid warnings to disperse. Sheriff of Lackawanna county summoned to preserve order amid fears of uprisings by foreigners and attacks on the stockade.
Ray Smith, 21, shot and killed Judge David Rogers as he entered the dining room at Smith's Hotel in Maynard, Union County. The murder stems from Rogers killing Smith's father in 1896 in a saloon pistol duel. Smith vowed revenge, fled, and remains at large.
Sheriff John Hartman of Pierce county left Tacoma to join the hunt for Tracey and Merrill with one or two deputies. Reports that the convicts were bottled up near Tenino proved unfounded as the desperadoes again eluded pursuers. Deputy Webb at Wilkeson and other Pierce officers reinforce patrols on highways and bridges.
