Steamship Geo W Elder Strikes Rock Near Gable
The Portland and San Francisco Steam Ship Company vessel Geo W Elder struck a submerged rock in the Columbia River about half a mile south of Gable at 10 50 Saturday night. It is pivoted on the edge of its wheel with the bow over 16 fathoms of water and the stern toward shore in from one to six fathoms. A large hole is torn in the bottom port side just forward of midship. Water 15 to 16 feet deep in the hold covers the gratings to four feet from the main deck. Cargo ruined but the vessel may be saved.
