A Salem plan seeks to swap votes to install Governor Geer as senator by ousting C E Wood and tempting democrats to unite for Geer in a statewide vote. The idea envisions Geer backing a Democrat for Congress in exchange, but no authority supports the scheme and details remain speculative.
United States Senators were chosen in multiple states including Penrose in Pennsylvania Stone in Missouri Hopkine in Illinois Clarke in Arkansas Platt in New York and Connecticut Smoot in Utah Gallinger in New Hampshire Kittridge in South Dakota Alger in Michigan Hansbrough in North Dakota and Platt in Connecticut. The Washington first-ballot results showed Ankney 48 Preston 41 Wilson 12 Turner 23 and 10 scattering. Oregon Washington and Colorado report deadlocks.
The Chicago Inter Ocean tells of a daring Civil War incident involving Earl J Lamson, a corporal of Company B, Fourteenth Iowa, who volunteered to set fire to a barn and haystacks behind enemy lines at Leesburg MO to light the field and aid General Ewing's trapped forces. His quick strike helped push Marmaduke's force back, allowing a safe retreat to Rolla. Lamson now resides at the Soldiers Home in Roseburg, described as hale and genial.
Dr Martin Damourette, a founder and stockholder of the Whale mine near Ashland, reports to a Portland press man about a Juneau island with a 4500 foot high gold seam. He guards the location for a secret return in the spring and shows exceptionally rich rock samples.
Irms Cody daughter of Buffalo Bill Cody is engaged to Lieutenant Clarence Arm strong Stott of the Tenth Cavalry U S A Colonel Cody’s old regiment. Stott earned his commission in the Philippines where he served as a private then first sergeant before a commission as second lieutenant. The engagement was announced at a Cody Wyoming dinner celebrating the opening of Stott’s hotel with a toast by Colonel Cody. The wedding will be in Cody with cowboys frontiersmen scouts and Indians expected to attend.
In Lacew January 23 report, Senator Marsters of Douglas abstains on final passage of the Lewis and Clark Exposition appropriation bill amid a 27 ayes 2 noes 1 not voting. The debate features amendments to require a guaranteed match and calls for a statewide vote, with supporters citing Northwest heritage and regional benefit while opponents warn against overreach.
Hansbrough introduces a fellow-employe bill drawn from Minnesota law, to make railroads liable for employe injuries caused by superior agents or coemployees in other departments. A man named Martin was struck and killed by a northbound train while crossing a trestle north of Cantaxa Oregon.
