London reports suggest Secretary Hay and Lord Pauncefote may form a commission with United States and Canada to settle Alaska boundary and other disputes. The Daily Mail notes the U S secured the isthmian canal treaty without an equivalent and should now show restraint.
The French steel four masted bark Asie capsized near Portland after a loud crash of masts and timbers. One injured longshoreman Charles Rosenthal receives a minor head contusion and sprained leg. The captain's wife was rescued and the dock is frail, risking total loss if the vessel sinks. Captain Olivand was not aboard. An effort to right the vessel will begin immediately.

His wife had just secured a divorce last week on cruelty charges with custody awarded to her for the two other daughters.
