The Oregon state legislature will convene in Salem on Monday January 9 for a forty day biennial session to draft and revise laws. It lists 90 members: 60 in the House and 30 in the Senate, with detailed occupation classifications for both houses and representations from Marion, Multnomah, Clackamas, Wasco, and other counties.
The Oregon Express known as the Shasta Express from Portland ran into a gravel train on a siding at Suisun California due to a misplaced switch. Engineer Henry Peterson was killed and a Martinez passenger slightly injured. All others were shaken. neither crew nor passengers suffered serious injuries.
Dr Chaadwick of Cleveland under indictment with his wife for forgery reached New York by steamer and will return to Cleveland as guest of Sheriff Barry. He says there will be no arrest and he is innocent, praising his 50 year Cleveland residence and expressing shock at recent newspaper reports. He spoke of his daughter Mary and his professional career.
Enor Avellaneda, son of a former Argentine president, residing in Paris, is sentenced to one month in jail a 100 fine and 2000 damages for an automobile accident last June. A young woman run down by the car died the next day and witnesses say the owner was driving.
Mise Margue Hyde Leiter, daughter of Levi Z Leiter and Mary T Carver Leiter, wed Henry Molineaux Paget Howard the 19th Earl of Suffolk at the Lester residence in Wasatsetos. The ceremony was performed by Rev Roland C. Smith with only family present. couple will travel to New York then England.
A Wedford Telegram correspondent reports that local capitalists have organized to build a Crater Lake railroad. The line will tap a thriving sugar pine belt and a rich agricultural area, plus provide a scenic route to Crater Lake National Park. Construction starts once right of way is secured and weather permits.
Portland dispatch reports ex State Senator Charles Hilton and U S District Attorney John Hall with Chief W J Burt before a grand jury in a fraud inquiry. The case was handed to Special Prosecutor Heney and no indictments were returned by noon.
The Douglas County Circuit Court upholds the county prohibition order for Deer Creek and North Roseburg. The ruling dismisses plaintiff Max Weiss's petition and orders costs against the plaintiff. Seven Roseburg saloons in Deer Creek face one day of closure on January 1, 1905.
President Roosevelt removes United States District Attorney John H Hall of Oregon amid the land fraud prosecutions. Attorney General Moody cites general purposes of the land fraud case prosecutions and notes Haney will handle the cases. Moody declines to specify charges and says the move serves the service. Senator Fulton of Oregon had discussed the cases with the President earlier in the day.
Corvallis saloons will close next Saturday in line with a late prohibition election decision. Adam Asel of Westerfelt's plans a public lunch counter in the building while a few saloons may keep pool halls open, though all will comply and suffer losses of stock and furniture.
B H VanBuren aged 77 died at Comstock on December 27, 1904 due to old age. Remains were shipped to Jefferson for interment. He was father of G H VanBuren 8 P Agent at Comstock and had two other sons living in Astoria.
United States Senator John Hipple Mitchell and Congressman Binger Hermann were indicted on conspiracy to defraud the Government of public funds. George Sorenson also indicted for allegedly offering a bribe to District Attorney Hall. The case centers on land claims and alleged influence to secure patent through Mitchell and Hermann with affidavits and forged or influenced documents.
