Death of Thomas Kay the pioneer of Oregon woolen mills
Thomas Kay a pioneer Oregon woolen manufacturer died at St. Vincent's Hospital Salem after a long illness. Born in 1837 in Applebridge England he arrived in the United States 1857 and built a woolen industry in Salem. He led the Willamette Woolen Mills, rebuilt the Salem Woolen Mill after a 1895 fire, and founded hosiery and underwear works later burned in 1896. He married Ann Singsby and had ten children, with five living. He was active in public life and supported employment during hard times. Funeral held at First Baptist Church with burial at the Royal cemetery beside his son.
