The Republican state convention opened at noon with officials Paxton and Coohan presiding. The ticket listed Paxton for President, J D Daly for Vice President, and several others for judges, senators, representatives, and party posts across multiple counties.
The Oregon Republicans in convention reaffirm loyalty to the gold standard and praise 14 advances making it part of law. They urge unity to prevent free coinage of silver, endorse national policy including Philippine affairs, and celebrate the 2nd Oregon Regiment’s wartime record. They call for retrenchment, reform, constitutional amendments, and public-works aims including a Panama Canal and direct election of U S Senators.
The Republican party renominated M. A. Moody for Congress in the second district. Delegates Jos. Simon and F. B. Stanley attended the National Republican convention as unstructured delegates. Text notes delegates were not instructed.
The House of Representatives approves a constitutional amendment requiring direct popular election of U S senators. The resolution passes unanimously. A mis-spelled health claim advertisement promotes Mok Tea as a cure for headaches digestion and constipation.
Straight Populists craft platform and name a ticket at Powraxp Oregon on April 14 1900. Delegates elect H. E. Courtney for Supreme Court J. C. Young for Congress Baker County John Sears for First District and J. K. Sears for Second District plus four Presidential Electors Dr Embree and others. The second day of the Oregon convention in Portland is orderly with nominations and a Cincinnati delegation chosen.
Paris reports the opening of the Exposition with President Loubert officiating. The czar and czarina arrived in Moscow as rumors spread of a manifesto from Italy and a British demand for immediate peace under threat of action. The report notes no reserves allowed leave, linking orders to summer maneuvers in central provinces with 200,000 troops and Emperor William expected to attend.
A Bloemfontein dispatch dated April 14 reports a Royal Irish patrol, with Lord Rosslyan, captured. Lord Rosslynn was sent to Krog atad. Paris Exposition opens with celebratory crowds and a speech by M Millerand. US President Edison congratulates France on the Exposition.
The Eureka Mining Company bonded its property for $75,000 to Ashland and Medford parties on the Denver City ledge. The Montreal and Oregon Gold Mines Limited of Ashland are reported as principal interests. T. J. Hussey shipped 3 ounces of the finest ore seen in town last year as part of the clean-up at the Aiseey and McCrackee mine on Grave Creek.
