Douglas County Exhibit at Lewis and Clark Fair

Oregon School Land Frauds Reported by Grand Jury

The Marion county grand jury convened to probe extensive fraud in Oregon school lands. Authorities estimate seven eighths of lands were fraudulently acquired, with the state deprived of hundreds of thousands of acres over years via fictitious applicants and perjury. Internal conspirators across Oregon are said to be involved.

Grain and Fruit Prospects Promising in Southern Oregon

All nature is smiling again in Southern Oregon as the week’s storm breaks. Warm sunshine replenishes vegetation after soaking ground, boosting damper hay and grain prospects in the Umpqua river valley. General crop conditions are excellent and fruit prospects appear uninjured thus far with no perceptible decrease in apple or hardier fruit crops.

Two attempts to wreck the Overland near Albany

Albany Oregon April 3 two sabotage attempts targeted the overland train due at midnight. A freight engine derailed by ties placed two miles from the city, another pile reported near a half mile out followed by explosions heard as the overland neared. Police, sheriff and railroad men removed obstructions and kept watch. a $500 reward is offered by Southern Pacific for information leading to arrests.

Boston April 4 Heiress Miss Dasorah Sayles daughter of the late Rhode Island cotton king Frederick S. Sayles has chosen Rev. Frederick B. Hill assistant pastor of the Congregational church over two Italian nobles. The June wedding will disappoint wealthy New York suitors and follow a European test of affection that confirmed her preference for the preacher.

Transient roasts alive in Roseburg camp tragedy

Walter Hayes a 26 year old transient from Ollie Iowa was found burned alive after epileptic fits caused him to roll onto a bed of coals in a hobo camp near the Roseburg brewery. He died two days later at a local hospital after extensive burns and medical efforts. His burial was arranged at county expense with his father to be informed after the ceremony.

President Roosevelt Embarks On Southern and Western Tour

President Roosevelt leaves Washington for a two month journey to attend Rough Riders reunion in San Antonio Texas and hunt big game in Oklahoma and Colorado. No Libel Case Dismissed by Grand Jury in Ashland

The grand jury found no true bill against J. W. Robinson on a charge of criminal libel tied to Ashland's December municipal election. Robinson had posted bonds of 200 dollars and faced witnesses including Mayor H. S. Evans. After a preliminary hearing he was bound over, and the case now closes with hopes it will not be revived. Miller pleads not guilty in federal case

Harry W. Miller was brought to the U S District Court and pleaded not guilty after waiving indictment. He is linked to Miller & Kincart and accused of fraudulent acts in Southern Oregon and California. Kincart posted bail. Miller remains jailed, appearing worn from detention.

Kansas man E D Stratford surrenders in Portland

E D Stratford formerly a U S interior department special agent surrendered at the U S marshals office in Portland after indictment on land fraud charges tied to the Butte Creek Lumber Co. He said his name and was arraigned with $4000 bond set and allowed to travel to Eugene to obtain bond.

Roseburg City Council Tackles Street Remonstrances

At a Monday meeting Roseburg officials rejected most remonstrances against a five street improvement plan, sending concerns to the street committee for six month review. The council approved actions including a $500 Oak Street sewer, relief aid for injured firefighters, and retention of legal counsel to challenge West Roseburg incorporation efforts.

Work on the Medford railroad begins with ceremonies

Medford Oregon April 4 the first dirt in the grading of the Medford and Crater Lake railroad was turned at the junction with the Southern Pacific a ceremony attended by hundreds from Jackson County and Southern Oregon Mrs A A Davis turned the first shovelful and speeches were made by prominent Oregon men including W E Coman Southern Pacific official. The event interrupted business as every local establishment closed for the afternoon.
