A dispatch from St Petersburg describes the disappearance and brutal maltreatment of two girls, one English named Rowe Whalley, at a Danilov monastery. The government orders a strict inquiry while the Holy Synod sends a commission to Moscow.
Portland visitor W. J. Applegate went to Oakland last week while Mrs. N. Braig of Myrtle Creek stayed with Mrs. C. P. Bailey. Miss Minnie Ellison of Wilbur teaches on the Lower Calapooia, and Miss Jeesie Taylor has returned from Springfield. Dr. Gilmour came back fromEllison on professional business. George Bacon, Looking Glass teacher, visited town. L. B. Roney and F. B. Bellman were in Oakland on business. Mrs. Geo. Hall returned from Portland. David R. Parker noted as chief clerk in Attorney General Crawford’s office at Salem. E. H. Pinkston testified in Jacksonville and returned. Edna Harvey returned from Roseburg to English Settlement. Mrs. Georgiana Deardorff left for Ashland to spend the summer. Judge and Mrs. L. B. Stearns returned to Portland. Elder C. P. Bailey was in Portland for his elder brother’s funeral in Los Angeles.
Port land businessman H G Sonnemann spends time in the city on business. Mrs J Morgan visited Jacksonville early last week. Dr Bowersox and family moved to a new home. Mrs Melvina Elis visits Glendale to see her son and daughter. Frank Bailey of Canyonville and his sister Mrs Geo Elum are mentioned with Celia Hulbert leaving to visit her grandmother near Grants Pass. L L Hurd returns from Corvallia and Roseburg after two weeks away. Rev S A Bougins of Roseburg preached at the Presbyterian church. Mrs Lou Shea returns from Jacksonville convent visit with Irene Plotner. H W Hulbert trips to Grants Pass before resuming business. Mr Hilbert, formerly News editor, noted.

Secretary Hitchcock reports the Hanebrough Irrigation law will cost at least 11.66 per acre instead of 5.00, with added pro rata charges on public lands. Projects include a Gunnison tunnel, Devil's Gate dam on Sweetwater, Salt River dam in Arizona, St. Mary's diversion in Montana, the Milk River link, and Truckee Carson storage in Nevada, each raising challenges and potential yields for irrigation.

Six pounds of nails wires buttons stones and other foreign substances were found in the stomach of Pred Cerrow a Michigan asylum patient who died of a liver abscess likely caused by a large nail piercing the stomach. Cerrow had long practiced swallowing metal coal bricks and stones to induce treatment.
The Department of Agriculture reports many letters from farmers seeking information about a supposed cornwheat hybrid. It confirms no such hybrid exists or could be fertile, clarifies the grain is correctly called Polish wheat, not native to Poland, likely originating around the Mediterranean. Reports of 60 to 100 bushel yields are dubious. no seed is in stock.
Two prominent Spring Lake youths in fashionable women’s attire gained entry to a hall for a Manasquan and Spring Lake girl basketball game. Management canceled the start until they left. Outside, a crowd beset them and others allegedly bore holes in the hall sides. borough officers provided protection for the players.
