Washington reports a 23 ship U S task force including three carriers with about 250 jets to safeguard reconnaissance flights off North Korea. Task Force 71 is identified after radar sightings by Japan's Maritime Safety Agency.
The American Cancer Society branded cigarette makers as merchants of death and noted a 50 percent rise in advertising since 1964. Doctors Williams and Baker urged Congress to require a strong health warning in all cigarette ads including radio and TV. In Prague, Lubomir Strougal warned against anti Soviet elements as he praised Gottwald and stressed strict party line.
Rep. Donald Rumsfeld accepts appointment as director of the Office of Economic Opportunity and a White House cabinet rank role. He told 13th District GOP women in Glenview his last congressman’s address and said Senate confirmation is expected soon. He plans to push poverty programs as a testing ground via the CEO office.

Gov Richard Ogilvie will call a special election for the 13th Congressional District to fill the resigning Don Rumsfeld. The first Tuesday in October is targeted, with voting likely at the same polls as last November’s general election. The elected representative will take the seat immediately.
